Home planet of the MEM Crews in Gucci BLDG??
After recently having spent a lot of time in the Gucci BLDG (MD-11 training), one thing comes to mind about the MEM crews I encountered there:
Jerry: This is like that Twilight Zone where the guy wakes up, and he's the same - but everyone else is different!
Some of the questions I was asked by the various alien life-forms, disguised as people, I encountered:
Q."As a single guy, why didn't you bid Hong Kong FO?!?! I'd go there in a heartbeat if I didn't have kids!!"
A.First off, why should a pilot have to be single and w/o kids in order to bid an FDA? Why can't our "family orientated company" come up with a stipend that makes it viable for a pilot with a kid or two (what, about 95% of our pilot group?) to bid an FDA?
Their reply: Dear-In-Headlights look. Ever ask a Filipina waitress if she can substitute a side salad for the fries, or any other question for that matter? "Uhh...."
A few minutes would pass, gears would grind, and the alien would come up with a follow up question....
Q."Well, you could go, couldn't you?"
A.Have you seen what 2700 dollars a month gets you for an apartment in Hong Kong? Did you take the time to Google "Hong Kong apartments for rent" and do the exchange rate conversion? I'll make it simple, 2700 US = approx 21000 HKD.
Their reply, and a quick one (clearly the aliens were prepared for this one): Well, pilots who live in MEM don't live for free. You should have to pay something out of your own pocket.
My reply: Involved explaining the difference, on a 5th grade level, between rent and mortgage. How, being forced to live in a domicile where it's virtually impossible to buy (the alien was not aware of the $1300/mo clause if you buy), then yes, your rent, and then some, SHOULD be fully covered by the company. How many MEM pilots throw 2000 bucks a month away each month by renting an apartment as their primary residence? Do you do that?
Their follow-on reply: See above comment about the Filipina waitress.
Other things I heard:
"Ohh, you could easily live out in the beautiful French countryside on the allowance. It's so beautiful out there, that would be great."
My answer: How do I get from my country cottage to the airport every time I go to work? Do you know what a 2.5 hour taxi ride costs in France? Do you think I could even get a taxi home at 1:30am? Do you think we should be forced to buy our own car in France? How does this work for the pilots who are on reserve, living that far from the airport? By the way, isn't the point of having a base in Paris to be able to live in Paris, not 3 hours away? May as well be living in Coillerville. I wonder if they have deer hunting and bass fishing there too? Just curious, are you going to bid Paris?
Their reply: See above.

Good news is hotels seem to be improving thanks to work by all parties. Latest SIG update indicates the "danger mall" hotel in IAH will be replaced with a downtown hotel...that's a good move. I'm not the expert, but your comment does have merit, and there are some folks working on it. Usually have to wait until contracts are up for renewal to change them, however.
And yeah...I'm a broken record on this...but email the SIG and do pilot ops reports when you can so we can keep making this better.

Yea, I know what you are saying. Kinda makes you feel like a foreigner, eh? Now I think I know what the Nam vets felt like when they came back!
It is amazing that there are so many details of the FDA LOA that most dont know about, especially the details where we actually gave something to the Company....in return for nothing. Boy, we leveraged the cr@p out of the Company when "we" negotiated that agreement!
Having said that, I have yet to meet anyone (except one) that voted for the LOA. Kinda strange. I would think that with 68% voting yes, I would run into at least one of them. Makes me think that maybe the vote was a fraud. Naw, that cant be.
