CAN stby
Just got back from 4 days there. Good gym, ok food but not much at all to do. I asked the union why we are spending two days at the airport before two days of stby. They said they will get back to me. Not holding my breath on that one. Best of luck.

Anyone got any good shopping gouge in the area? I'm likewise going to have a bit of quality time there.
As for why the extra days...I'm sure there is redundancy built in as a broke jet in LAX means 24 hours of slip time. Besides...in this period of reduced BLGs the last thing you want to do is complain about "synthetic time" built into a pairing. Would you rather have a little slop and the pay or be optimized into and out of the hub? Be careful what you wish for...
Again...specific questions on this should go to RH on the SIG. He's probably the man for answers. His direct email is on the FDX-MEC website.

It's painful, but not intolerable. The hotel is very isolated, with nothing but the terminal within walking distance. There are buses that run into town, but I never did it. The hotel rooms are nice. The internet works well. There's a very nice free breakfast buffet in the morning, and free drinks and "heavy" hors d'oeuvres every evening on the 6th floor. The Chinese restaurant on the second floor is very good and you get 30% off if you bill it to your room. The workout room is marginal, but the indoor pool is nice.
There are a number of Chinese restaurants in the terminal, but nothing better than the one in the hotel. There is a McDonald's clear over on the far end of the north terminal if you get a hamburger craving.
My suggestion is you bring a couple of good books and make sure your Slingbox is working well before leaving home. Good luck.

Albie, my question was when they say layovers over 16 hrs are downtown, they dump you at the airport hotel. You sit at the airport for 48 PRIOR to sitting 48 hrs of stby. I realize the company doesn't want to transport you from one hotel to the other, but they did agree to this. I would urge you to sit the 96 hrs of this and then tell me what you think. Good luck.

I've heard of some folks using the public transpo there to get around. They say once you get lost and find your way back it's not so bad Personnally I went out for a quick smog filled jaunt....needless to say a couple of hours later made it back.
I second the bring a good book or three. I would also check pilotswap.net, I know there is some gouge on there, but I can't say if it is for the Holiday Inn or that hotel.

Holiday Inn, CAN
Since we’re talking about CAN layover hotels, here’s my pitch for the downtown hotel, the Holiday Inn. From the SIG reports, guys are complaining about this hotel because there’s not enough “western activities/eateries” close by. One solution is to move to another hotel closer to the Expat area. The problem I see with moving is the potential cost to us in the long term. The Holiday Inn is giving us a FREE breakfast and FREE drinks/food at happy hour. Plus, the lobby bar stays open well past midnight. If you go out the hotel for a short 10-15 minute walk, you’ll find a couple of nice restaurants/bars on the ISLAND, plus there’s even a Starbucks.
For those who want to check-out the Expat area, cab rides are cheap..about $4 one way.
So, be careful what you wish for, a move could cost us more money if the new hotel doesn’t honor the FREE benefits we’re receiving at the Holiday Inn!!
