One of my UPS buddies recently described it thusly...

"If Fred Smith needed an organ transplant, 2,000 guys would offer themselves up as donors. If [UPS boss] Scott Davis needed the same procedure, a dozen UPS guys would gladly offer to fly the donated organ for 'free' on their days off."

To an outsider, it seems that Fred loves pilots, and the pilots love Fred. Like any married couple, they have their occasional spats, but the love between them is always evident. He takes care of them, and they, in turn, take care of him. It's no wonder that guys are fightin' to get into the place.

The relationship between UPS and it's pilots is also like that of a married couple...a loveless marriage in which both parties constantly bicker and complain, but entertain no serious thoughts of leaving. They both know that the affair between them is mutually beneficial, and that any "divorce" would be financially devastating to both sides.

Both are good companies to work for, but for different reasons.

I think saying that 2000 FDX pilots would line up to give Mr. Smith their organ is a fairly accurate statement.

Myself? I would make him negotiate with me for at least 3 years...And then I'd send him a red letter telling him that we'd go on "with or without him", if he didn't agree to my proposal.

Just kidding!!! Of course I'd give him an organ. We all know that this company would fail instantly if it were not for Mr. Smith.

Blood sure, bone marrow maybe but either would be contingent on an equitable end to 4A2b. I think I need most of my other organs.

I think it is more of your personal disdain for Fred and childish rants than it is a love fest for Fred.

There are links to both red letters on the ALPA website. Not easy to find, but they are there.
