Default Majors that have/had cargo-only a/c

I remember several years ago seeing a couple of UAL DC-10 cargo carriers parked at ORD. What ever happened to UAL's cargo outfit? I would have assumed that the cargo side would be more stable than the pax side...

I know Northwest also had some cargo carrier 747s but I do not know if they are still flying.

Do all the majors have a few cargo carriers in their fleet? Do they compete with or contract to/from FDX and UPS ?

Most move via belly freight now.

Ual used to Dc-8
AA had 747 100 ups bought them and used them up
NWA will be shutting down the freight side with the Delta merger
Cathay Pacific has a freight division.

UPS will use anyone to move packages if they have to

From what we can tell UPS doesn't consider any PAX carrier that carries freight significant competition.

Why?

Different Business Model perhaps.

The only cargo similarity between UPS/FedEx and passenger airlines is that both fly aircraft. UPS and FedEx have an in-house global distribution network that includes IT, trucking, and small package delivery.

Airlines who operate cargo only deliver bulk freight to the airport and third party consolidators take it from there. As you might guess, the yield for bulk freight is far less than that of time critical small packages.

As a DAL guy, I've never seen a UPS package in the belly of an MD-88. However, I have seen cargo bins full of FedEx packages.

As a FedEx guy, I too have never seen a UPS package on any of our jets. Makes me wonder why..... Just kidding.

UPS has used Aloha and they use carriers in other parts of the world, this may open a heated scope discusion. Since 9/11 domestically its decreased.
If they need to use a carrier to move the freight they will without hesitation.
We have a scope tracker feature on our union web site so crewmembers can report possible scope violations. Level of trust

AA didn't use the 747s as freighters, I think the last freighters they had were 707s and DC-7s. Braniff had 727 QCs and Aloha had 737QCs (I remember the bakery smell that flooded the ramp in Hilo.) Delta ran CW-46s and L-100s. And Alaska had 737 Combis.
