Default Rnav/gps/rnp

What is the consensus among the cargo community? Are these in your eyes good, bad, or are you indifferent to them? Should the FAA be getting slammed right now for working too fast to add these? I am trying to get the pilots opinions on these systems for a term paper. Thanks!

In between flying jobs (OK ... unemployed after my Legacy carrier went broke), I was employed as a GPS Flight Test Engineer. GPS is far superior to all previous navigation sources (the military version even more so). I'm glad we have it, the combined GPS/INS position information is a remarkable improvement in aviation.

For those that don't know, much of the EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE GPS system cost was justified by the cost savings of "standing down" the current aging (expensive maintenance) VOR, TACAN, NDB, ILS, OMEGA systems ...

I agree that turning off the non critical VORs (not sure what qualifies as a critical VOR though) will incur a significant savings. This comes in response to the following article FAA Criticized Over RNAV/RNP Strategy | AVIATION WEEK
Thanks for the input...lets get some more.

Why do you ask the same Q in several sections on site?

Im trying to get as much feed back as possible. More exposure = More information = a better paper (at least that the theory)!

They are part of the continuous improvement in navigation systems that have occurred since the beginning of aviation. Anything that improves accurracy and reliability is a good thing. Note: The FAA never moves to fast.

Hi!

I am upset with the glacially slow pace of FAA modernization, to include GPS approaches, ADS-B, better equipment for ATC, to include text communications vs. less voice communication.

The problem is that the feedback you're getting isn't scientific. Additionally, you have no idea who is giving you the feedback. It could be your teacher for all you know who is giving you a bunch of nonsense.

I understand why you would field questions here; however, I really don't think it is going to be of much use. You aren't going to have any demographic information about your sources.

Go to the nearest crew layover hotel, meet the crew in the bar, and ask them nicely to fill out a simple survey.

I can certainly understand your being upset with the FAA for not speeding up the inclusion of GPS approaches. I mean after all, that DC-9 you're flying could certainly take full advantage of them.
