Looks like an engine problem...
CAAFI yet to release aircraft - Fiji Times Online CAAFI yet to release aircraft Saturday, October 31, 2009 THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Fiji Islands says it is working with ground handling agents to ensure all procedures are followed before the release of a United Parcels Services cargo aircraft MD11. The plane made an emergency landing on Thursday after one engine experienced problems mid-air. CAAFI chief executive officer Netava Waqa said both CAAFI and the ground handling agents would also be monitoring the ratification action on site to ensure the correct procedures were followed. He said the fact that Nadi International Airport was put on full emergency alert showed that it was considered a serious incident. He said investigation requirements and procedures would be in accordance with the state where the aircraft was registered. The aircraft, was on its way to Sydney, Australia from Honolulu in Hawaii. Airports Fiji Limited spokesman Pio Rokosuka said UPS operations centre called the control tower at 12.55pm when the flight pilot advised it would be diverting to Nadi. "It was flying within our airspace at the time when it diverted due to an engine shutdown," he said. He said there were four people on board. "Immediately our Emergency Operations Centre opened and was on full alert. "The fire and rescue services were on the runway, the hospital was informed and the border and water police were also on alert. "The alert was cancelled at 3.30pm after the aircraft landed safely and all checks done and cleared," Mr Rokosuka said. Supposed to leave later today according to Flight Detail on UPS flightops website. |
