I know a guy who got extended in the field which then conflicted military duty--couldn't take the draft. Was given a ration of s$&t by RCP for not requesting mil leave. "His failure to do so, hurt FedEx and its customers. " Requesting mil leave on days off? That's a new one. And what if he had taken "leave" on a day off? Would the company have then assigned additional reserves/standby's because pilot xyz could only fly his assigned trip? When he explained what he was doing and said he had included his Wing CC, Squad CC, Alpa Military chair, the response was "please don't mistake direct questions as a lack of support for our military." Night and day change in tone. Threats and intimidation turned into "we're all here to help our military."

This is slightly off of topic, but I'll throw it out there for fun. I was once told by an ACP that it was my duty to call in sick anytime that I am not physically able to fly, as soon as I know that I am not able to fly.
Maybe every time that we are off duty and pop a top, we should call in sick, and then the next day after all ill effects are gone, we call back in well. It would sure put a kink in the Company's auto email for 7 sick calls in a year.
Just imagine if half of the crew force called in sick on off days every time that they were not physically able to fly.
By the way, I guess that I should go call in sick right now.
