When I was active duty I wanted too work the legacies UAL/Delta/AMR, but that was before I studied the industry and the height of their early, early 90's hiring boon. It was a herd mentality. After I decided to leave active, during the height of UAL/Delta and AMR 90's furlough season, looked at what the future would behold. Clearly, I never wanted to work for any pax carrier except Southwest. My preferred were FedEx and UPS with Southwest a third.
Got lucky. But was offered by a Delta Captain to get a guaranteed Delta interview when Delta recalled and started hiring in the mid late 90's. By the time of the offer, was at Big Brown. Had no desire and he admitted that the best days of the legacies were far behind them and that if he was entering
the industry again, he would have come to the same conclusion many FedEx and UPS pilots did. Beside, AMR was so stagnant that it clearly was a place to avoid. UAL had been shredded by management. Many friends were miserable. Better to go with a company that actually makes a profit flying airplanes in their business model.
