Mom Note:

Hmmmm, severe thread drift detected! Maybe I should start a new thread and call it "Tony and the French Jet." Y'all can give him (unsolicited, unwanted, unsound) advice and tips.

Regarding the large percentage of former and current military aviators at FedEx... is that because the company likes to hire (gives preference to) military experience... or is it because the military guys already in keep the networking going (sponsoring their friends and thus adding to the military population)?

I think it has more to do with networking than anything else. Under the previous leadership, you had to have three internal recs who actually flew with you, not just knew you or went to school with you. It's alot easier for AF/Navy bubbas to meet, fly, and stay in touch with a bunch of other pilots. I would imagine it's much harder for a straight civilian guy to meet and fly with three other guys who eventually get hired at FDX and would then agree to sponsor you, assuming they even remembered you. That being said, there's a bunch of guys at FDX who never flew in the military - so my opinion could be way off base. FWIW.

To add what Deuce said, military peeps can do things like fly in formation with each other and count that as flying together. Nothing wrong with that, but it does allow someone a much better chance to get a letter of rec from someone who is your contemporary than is often possible in the civilian world. If you're a civilian and you went to the typical Embry-Riddle, UND, etc you may ultimately have a bunch of good friends who you did primary flight training with, got hired at the same commuter, and upgraded around the same time. One of you gets hired at FedEx, but you can't sponsor the buddy because even though they've known them for a long time, you technically didn't fly with them. It wasn't always this way, and who knows what it will be in the future. Also like everything around here, there are a lot of unofficial loopholes if you know the secret handshake.
