UPS- Furloughing 3 TWU Dispatchers
#3
Standard operating procedure since the corporate revolt of the 1980's -- cut expenses (workers/salary/benefits), make remaining employees more efficient/productive (or else), don't share any increased productivity with labor, export as many jobs overseas (cheaper labor, fewer lawsuits, no safety regulations) as possible, etc. It should be obvious that "free" trade isn't free, particularly if you're an American worker. The only thing saving some professions (doctors, lawyers, airline pilots) is licensing. Unfortunately for pilots, we're licensed by the Feds who (with enough lobby money to Congress) can be more easily convinced to open up pilot jobs to cheaper labor markets. At least doctors/dentists/lawyers are smart enough to control entry into their professions at the trade (industry) level vice labor (company) level. So unlike the IPA which doesn't determine how many UPS pilots there are, the AMA/ADA/ABA do control how many docs, dentists, lawyers there are -- both by state licensing quotas and (indirectly) how many available slots there are for each class entering medical/dental/law school. Enjoy what you have now, it's only gonna get worse...

I think now you are going to see ATL go after the Airline big time now. They have made their cuts on the ground side and now they want the airline to do the same. I feel for the dispatchers losing their jobs, but I think we are only just beginning to see real cuts at the airline level.

I believe he is one of the many guys that put their house on the market for fear of the furlough. I didn't have that type of reaction, but then again, I haven't been furloughed before...

Thank you for the cnbc reference. I found the article that says:
“Shipper Plans to Eliminate 1,800 Jobs…” That workforce reduction was in addition to the 13,000 jobs it cut in 2009."
So that total of 14,800 is just since 2009 and only at UPS. We still haven't figured out the rest of his body count.
