Default LOR question for Fedex

I know that Fedex likes to hire guys with internal recs, but what about someone who is retired and/or a current VP? It will be a while before I qualify and Fedex is hiring, but I was wondering because I do know a VP and a retired guy, but I do not know anyone who is currently flying for you guys. Thanks.

It can't hurt. We haven't hired in 3 years and there is a new System Chief Pilot from when we last hired. I don't think anybody can give you an accurate answer to your question. Generally, the rec will hold more weight if you have flown with the person who writes the rec. A general rec from somebody with pull in the company may or may not be as heavily weighted by a bunch of pilots, but certainly would be better than no rec. Who knows what the hiring process will look like though when it eventually turns back up?

I think that was 2 days, 1 hour and 4 minutes.

A number of years ago I was talking to my assistant chief pilot about a guy I had recommended and who had not been called in for the interview. It was a good conversation (the guy was hired shortly thereafter), and at the end of it, the ACP showed me a letter of recommendation, addressed to Fred Smith, from a very well known senator, asking Fred to consider hiring the guy (who the senator was recommending), and saying that he'd consider it a favor to do so. Written across the recommendation, in Fred's own hand, was a note that basically said: "Treat this guy as you would anyone else." A very classy thing for Fred to have done.

Recommendations help, but recommendations from sponsors who are persistent, are way better. That assumes, of course, that you meet or exceed all the requirements. And of course, the company needs to be hiring.
