Jennifer Jackson was murdered by her daughter and convicted. She is in prison now. Of course, the daughter says she didn't do it. It was a very high profile case in Memphis. This crime isn't "usual" at all. They were upper middle class and living in a good neighborhood. This is an odd crime that happens occasionally in any part of the United States. 60 minutes type stuff.
I wouldn't put this in the Memphis is terrible thread. No more than the FDX pilot that didn't get convicted of murder. This crime wouldn't scare me away from Memphis, however, it might scare me away from my kids....
There's much better random violence to back up your case. It happens daily in Memphis, but it rarely happens in the nicer parts of Shelby County. I've lived here for years and don't mind it at all. Unfortunately, you have to know where you can and can't go, which is a statement in itself. I don't get gas (unless an emergency) near the airport at night, etc.... If you avoid certain areas, it can be a very decent place to live.

Mark,
Not sure why you harp on this. You chose to live somewhere else. Why are you so infatuated by the crime rate in a city that you do not live in? Bid Hong Kong if you never want to see Memphis again.
Where do you live, I am sure I could find something wrong with it too. Please come up with some new material.
I've lived in many parts of the US, and I actually like Memphis.

Dude,
It's not MaydayMark's opinion that Memphis is a huge sh*thole, it's Fortune Magazine, USA Today, US News and World Report's opinion ... keep your head buried in the sand if you like, we need locals in order to make the flight schedule work. I'm REALLY glad it's you and your family instead of me and mine

Where do you live Mark?
So you don't like Memphis? Big f'ing deal. Live somewhere else. End of story. Work somewhere else.
My family likes it here. There is plenty to do if you leave the crashpad. If my view of Memphis was the Holiday Inn Select, maybe I'd be afraid too. I don't like commuting. I've done it before. If fedex was based in Pittsburgh, I'd probably move there too. It provides me the opportunity to spend more time with my family. We have good friends and stay active.
I am not selling you on Memphis. I don't care where you live. I hope you like it there. But my guess is that with your negative view on life, you'd be miserable wherever you live. The family is probably happy that you commute, it is less time they have to spend with a total downer...
