UPS TA, the other side of the story Part 1

Don't you guys back your negotiating committee? Did you not elect these guys? Sounds to me that it is back to square one for you to me. We had the same problem with FPA in the beginning and ended up suffering under a substandard contract because of it.

how come everyone tries to get a 5-10 year contract in the aviation industry.
that way when times are good you cant renegotiate more from the company and when times are bad its an extra burden on the company
why dont people get shorter contracts and they can be reevaluated as neccesary?

Contract length really means nothing if a company falls on hard times. We have seen almost all of the passenger carriers renegotiate their contracts as the need arises in hard times, however they are almost never going to share the good times.
UPS and FEDEX on the other hand have benefited greatly from locking in low labor rates and then extending the negotiations ad infinitum. In effect they have seen a 5% reduction per year in true cost for the last five years. This also makes it easier for them to make long range planning assumptions. Locking in labor costs for the long haul is similar to hedging fuel, except of course it involves hedging humans.
