What got my attention were the last two paragraphs.

Even with global demand improving, Mr. Smith concedes that his company's investment in the new 777s is an aggressive one. By the end of fiscal 2016, the company plans to have 31 777s in its fleet.

But he says, the new planes' fuel efficiency—they consume 18% less fuel than an MD-11—would be an advantage even if business turned lower. "If we're wrong, the only thing we have to do is put an MD-11 on the ground," he says. "The secret of this business is you've got to have a defensive strategy, as well as an offensive strategy."

Wow, great article. Does not sound good for ANC though when the Boss is talking about how great it is to overfly it. Bummer...

This has been discussed before, but I hear they are going to do more non time critical flights through Anchorage. Heard Mr. Smith was there discussing this with the Hub folks and city.

I would think with JAL, AirFrance and Delta pulling capacity, there is an opportunity for this. Of course, as usual, it is subject to change.

Default Does everything start as a napkin sketch?

"At a brainstorming session several years ago, FedEx Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Frederick W. Smith and his counterpart at Boeing Co. used a napkin to sketch a cargo version of the aircraft maker's 777 passenger jet."

So, they needed to "sketch" an aircraft in use since 1995???

Good thing for the napkin or who knows what would have rolled off the line at Boeing.

"Okay, Fred....... now follow me on this. How about a 777 freighter.......

"Uhhhhhh"

"I know, I know.... I had a hard time with it at first too. Here, look at this napkin........ We take a 777 fuselage like this...... Put some wings and engines on like this....... maybe a Fedex logo on the tail...... A big door to load the stuff..... No windows or seats, of course."

"Pilots will need seats"

"Good call, Good call. I can't really put them on this sketch but I promise they'll be some pilot seats, Fred."

"Hey, paint a big, giant panda on the first one off the line and you've got yourself a deal!!"

And why couldn't these non critical flights be handled largely by HKG and MEM 11 pilots? I have heard from more than one source that ANC will not go away as a pilot domicile, but it will be a lot smaller than it once was. Bummer, it is a great place to live.

"It's quite a machine," the 66-year-old former Marine pilot says of the Boeing "triple seven,"

Fred was a FAC (forward air controller), not a pilot right?
