UPS Furlough (Part III)
#11
Hey Gumbie,
I would love to hear your take of the recent incident of a UPS pilot's passport being stolen from a locked case in his room in China. He was standed there for 9 days and UPS is refusing to pay him, forced him to find his own way home, and is blaming him for "losing" his passport. Why haven't you or other FQS's fixed this situation? Or is it his fault?
Would love to hear your opinion.

This is the problem with the United States nowdays. Nobody is accountable for their own actions anymore. How is it UPS' fault the pilot lost his passport? Why are people always blaming somebody else for your own stupid mistakes? Why would you leave your passport out of your site in a foreign country? Especially China Why should UPS or the FQS fix the situation of the pilot being irresponsible? What happens if a pilot loses his passport at home or lets it expire and cant fly? I'm sure it will be that a FQS stole it or a FQS changed the expiration date.
This is not about irresponsibility on the part of a crew member - it is about gross irresponsibility and neglect on the part of the employer.
God forbid this was a critical health issue or some other type of emergency.
The lack of assistance on the part of management at UPS is deplorable.
It will not be forgotten, either.

First of all, the passport wasn't "lost" it was stolen. The crew member was on company time. The company should have done everything it could to assist their crew member (employee) to get a replacement passport. It is obvious that you have never been in a country where communication is difficult, if not impossible, and had something go awry. What may seem a simple thing becomes a monumental task, particularly in a country like China.

Again why would you let it out of your sight? Did UPS leave the passport in a position to get stolen? I have been out of the country many of times and actually have a satellite phone to use in those cases. One would think the person's family would have an easier time getting the replacement passport. Does this pilots parents pay UPS to babysit?

"Several Americans currently incarcerated in China have been implicated in financial fraud schemes involving falsified bank or business documents, tax evasion schemes and assisting alien smuggling, including selling passports to provide aliens with travel documents. "
What would have happened if the pilot in this rumour lost his UPS ID and uniform?
Next time this pilot should contact the embassy:

Soyathink,
I think you've misunderstood my point.
I'm being furloughed, so we can save that whole discussion. The furlough has very little (if any) to do with UPS' financial state.
Why should we offer discounts to our employees and airline employees ? Why not try and create a new revenue stream. Mr. Scott Davis has said we need to create new sales leads...well...let him practice what he preaches.
Many UPS employees use FedEx. It's cheaper. I know, as a shareholder I should be using UPS. I've heard that argument. I don't disagree with it.
But to me, a more compelling argument is to save money for comparable services.
Many airline employees, have had to buy airline tickets for friends and family members that are not eligible for passes. Most that I know don't exclusively use their own airline (based on price), they shop around.
Airlines became saavy of this practice and started offering buddy passes (reduced rate of the full-Y fare) in order to capture revenue.
Finally, offering your employees a discount on your own products not just creates a source of revenue but is viewed by employees as a way to build loyalty to one's own company...they do the same thing with stock purchases-why not do the same with shipping products. One good idea can't be used elsewhere ?
I may be going out on a limb, but UPS may be a great company to Wall Street, but it's my opinion that employee morale is pretty low and sinking daily....why not do something to improve it ?
Just an off-handed thought,
FF

To even the most ardent fence sitter, that story sends chills up your spine. Even if half of it is true these people have created an entirely new class of '88 that will cost the company billions in ill will over the next 20 years. The reality is they simply don't care.
Some bean counter in Atlanta can put on paper the saved value of the furlough. It's too bad there wasn't any consideration given to the unmeasurable, intangible cost of this excercise-that has left 100+ crewmembers unemployed.

Would you say the same thing if he had taken it with him to dinner and gotten robbed on the street? UPS, as a company, gains a lot MORE helping out an employee in trouble then letting them swing in the breeze. Whatever happen to just doing the right thing? Would UPS suffer? Just an opnion. I hope you guys can work it out.

You don't have to like UPS. Remember UPS spent alot of money on everyone of the pilot group. They didn't have to hire you. They didn't have to spend the money in training cost on you. They did. They took a chance on you to do a great job for what you get paid well to do. Age 65, fleet retirements, and the economy caused the furlough. Look at how many three man crew jets Fed Ex still has compared to UPS.
Again, I am sorry you are losing your job and hope you find a company your happy to work for very soon. I've been there and know how it is.

You've got to stop running with every rumor you hear Seinfeld. You know good and well we would'nt do that to one of our own! Now lets talk about something productive.
With the economy turning around, its just a matter of time before our comrades are recalled from furlough. Lets try and expidite this by turning in sales leads and growing the buisness. More volume equals JOBS! You can all make a difference by turning in sales leads and growing OUR buisness!!
