UPS bases

Flying cargo is really starting to sound very nice to me after all this crap has been going on. I was wondering where UPS flies their 767s and MD11 internationally from the US? I know ANC is coming up soon with the MD11s but I was thinking more of SDF or ONT. I am assuming that flights from SDF will be going to Europe and ONT to the Pacific areas. Any info is much appreciated.

if all this crap was not going on would ups still sound pretty nice?

Agreed BoynamedSue, exactly!

For the 767 international, there is a fairly junior base in SDF. ONT has some Pac Rim flying but it's pretty senior. The SDFZ (international) does all the rest.

Funny how you all rip on the company yet I have 2 questions for you.

1. If you were here when all the "crap wasn't going on", why didn't you leave?

2. When all the "crap stops going on" are you going to leave?

Flying cargo never really sounded appetizing to me for a few reasons. The main reason is I am not really a night owl... But now that I have done some research and am inquiring about cargo I am slowly finding out that cargo is for me. Most of the passengers that I fly with on airlines are stupid and **** me off. I do not want to deal with those people at that cannot turn their phone off when the door is shut, that are wasted on the plane being obnoxious. I don't want to deal with that. Also I would like to fly international and see a bit of the world... I have come to the conclusion that cargo is the way to go. No pax just boxes. Flying to Cologne, Dubai, and Kansai is what I am looking for. Thank you last two posters. I am still aways off but I am getting there.

Josh,

If you don't like flying nights at companies like UPS and FedEx, you don't have to with a little bit of seniority. I haven't flown a night sort in over a year.

The old days of every flight going through Louisville or Memphis in the wee hours of the morning are long gone. Those flights still exist, but the extensive international networks make the flying more varied than you'll get almost anywhere else.

In my base, Ontario, CA, some of the most junior trips are day trips. The most senior? By far, Pac Rim flying, where you DO sit night sorts.

Choosing cargo isn't that bad, as you've discovered. Our work isn't filled with glamour, but we get steady paychecks and get the chance to hit some fun destinations around the world.

Flight Attendants handle most of the passenger problems you mention, and they generally do a good job. I found most passengers to be well-behaved and grateful. Cargo pilots, especially the Captain, will occasionally have to deal with uncooperative people too. If you're impatient and easily frustrated, neither cargo nor passenger flying will be enjoyable, regardless of the income you earn. Best wishes for a great flying career! :)
