FedEx Embargo

Hey FDX Guys,

Have you heard any rumblings about an embargo with interline shipping this year? I know they haven't had one in the last couple of years. I was just wondering, with the increase in volume, if they might institute one this year. I'm looking to ship Christmas gifts up to the family in NJ instead of having to haul them on the flight. Thanks!

I attempted to ship an Xmas gift today from my local FedEx Office and was unable to get my standard (75%) discount despite having my company ID with me (seemed like approximately a 55% discount ). I drove to the Post Office and mailed it instead

Can't you just ship using your shipping acct number and get the discount automatically? Leave it up to the computers rather than the desk folks?

Come on Mark! Where's your loyalty? I didn't figure you to be a guy who watched his nickles and dimes. Besides, you probably spent more in gasoline to drive to the post office than you saved by shipping with them.

Funny you should say that Mark. The last 3 times I attempted to ship at a FedEx Office location I couldn't receive the standard discount either. I took my packages to the ramp when I was on my way to Memphis and the IDA helped me out no problems and saved me the 75%.

Strange?

No. The discount is given manually after looking at your ID. I had lengthy discussion about that with someone at fedex recently. Fedex office is not very user friendly. I have had to ship some odd sized items lately and the only people who would help with packaging were the UPS store. Does UPS give an airline discount?

I have to disagree with that one. If you have a FedEx Account Number, the company can attach the discount to your profile. You can actually see the discount in My FedEx on fedex.com. I do the shipping label on the website and then just drop the package off.

Maybe someone has the contact number for the people that put the info in your profile. I'm sorry but I can't find it.

I agree with gderek, in that all you need do is fill out the airbill, using your FedEx account number, and drop your package off, and you'll get the 75% shipping discount. This of course, presupposes that you are a FedEx employee. If you are the employee of another airline, you'll have to show your ID and at that time you should get the discount. UPS does not offer a shipping discount. That goes for their own employees as well as the rest of us.

As for help with packaging, I would guess that it would depend on how busy they are at the time you asked for help. I've never had that problem, but that's because I always pack my stuff myself. The only problem I've ever experienced with the FedEx guys happened only a month or two ago, when I brought in a broken racquet, to be sent back to the manufacturer. It was packaged correctly and the airbill was affixed properly and filled out completely. When I presented it to the clerk, he asked me what was in the package, to which I said, "why do you want to know." This started a 5 minute discussion about privacy. I didn't feel that he had the right to know, and he of course felt that it was his sworn obligation to know. We ended up in a Mexican standoff, with neither one budging. I finally asked for a supervisor, who came over and accepted the package with a smile and a "Thank you." Oh well.

JJ, this from the FedEx Express Terms and Conditions...

"We may, at our sole discretion, open and inspect any shipment without notice."

So maybe the agent didn't have the right to ask you what was in the package, but he could have accepted it and then just opened it.
