Subic Bay

Are there any pilots here based and living in Subic Bay? Just curious as to what life's like over there. I looked on GoogleEarth and could only see two planes that appeared to be FedEx.

Yes there are pilots working for FedEx living in Subic Bay. Currently, there are 75. The reason why you only saw two aircraft was because that satellite photo was taken during the day and the aircraft were all either flying or on the ground somewhere else. If you have ever been to Memphis during the day only, you'd have no idea how big the operation is. Be in Memphis at 0130 and you will see something completely different.

There are 5 or 6 Airbus A-310's in Subic. That one on the ground is the spare. There was also an MD-11.

The flying is pretty good out in Subic and the living is generally easy. There are things that will drive you nuts though. The beer is cheap and the women are nice.

That's 5 understatements by my count! ;)

Night time there, the ramp is loaded with 8-10 MD11s and maybe 1-2 Airbuses. FYI - the pilot base is scheduled to close in a couple years with a new Asian hub to open in Ghuangzhou, China. No word yet on whether there will be another Asian domicile!

Cool! Have you flown to Subic before?

fantom 08-28-2006 04:45 PM

yes if you want you can fly there every month, provided you have enough seniority to bid the Subic trips. Some people love it, and some people hate it..... IMO its a great layover, and also would be a great domicile if you were a single male type person. Easy access to the rest of Asia, in particular SE Asia, so you can "get out of town" whenever you want to your favorite Asian haunt.

Do you have a pet Mongoose?

Or, an aversion to snakes? . .or mosquitos? The Mongoose is required equipment for the occasional Cobra that wriggles into your hooch.
