FDX Passover Pay -- Couple of MD-11 Nuggets Activated

FedEx started paying passover pay to pilots who bid ANC on bid 0503 or bid 0602 and have not gone to training.

The first "nugget" activated on Aug 24 and all affected pilots got an email and notification saying that they are receiving passover pay "for all trips flown in Aug bid month from the 24th on AND for everything starting with the Sept bid month."

The email stated that it should be reflected on the Sep 15th pay statement.

They also explained that an LOA changed the contract provision that passover pay was to be paid after the individual activated in the seat. The LOA changed it to "as soon as the junior guy activates".

That's nice to hear - - something working like it's supposed to.

The referenced LOA can be viewed on-line at https://pilot.fedex.com/contract/LOA...s/LOA_POPA.pdf

I'm thinkin' the nuggets (I forget their color - - purple? gold? :) ) won't be needin' to buy drinks for a while now.

:)

Just one of the many things that are better at FDX rather than other carriers!!

At Flying Tigers we also had pay protection if a junior pilot was trained first. The big difference is that when a junior pilot was activated, ONE pilot was protected. It was only done on a one for one basis. My guess is that both Tigers and Seaboard would have challanged that pay protection because the junior pilot activated is getting first year pay. Not sure how an arbitrator would look at that.:( I do know that when Nixon imposed a nationwide pay freeze Seaboard used it as an excuse to keep pilots on first year pay. BTW first year pay was $650 a month, no extra no matter how many hours you flew. MAX hours 30 days=120!!!

Annnnnnnnnd ... I just want to point out, it was an enhancement negotiated by ALPA (the LOA, that is).

When the first Postal Contract promised hiring in large numbers and a "huge" bid, The Company began selectively paying some Flex Instructors to remain in the schoolhouse rather than move up to the next seat. Passover Pay for all but the SOs had been taken away with the FPA-"negotiated" contract, and large-scale defections loomed on the horizon.

In a move that amazed many and bewildered others, ALPA objected to the selective payment of extra money to certain individuals outside the terms of the contract. The result, though, was the CONTRACTUALLY GUARANTEED payment of Pay-Only Passover Adjustment pay to all seat positions (except for wide-body Capts, of course). It could not be offered and retracted at the whims of the Company.

Sounded like a good deal for the Flex Instructors and LCAs, SCAs, etc., but there is just enough disharmony amongst us and envy of instructors that many members might have voted against it just to spite them. That's where the Passover Pay came to be paid at the effective date rather than accumulating credit towards a future lump-sum payment.

Good for instructors, and good for line guys. Brought to you by the same team that just negotiated a TA.

Would you like some condiments with that, Foxhunter? ;)

"Just one of the many things that are better at FDX rather than other carriers!!"

We have that at Horizon, too. Not that I'm saying I think we are equally compensated in general!
