I kinda like the idea of converting it to an open cockpit DC-3 ...

Ya know, goggles, scarf in the wind, radial engines purring away ...

... and you don't have to wipe the oil off of your face after you land

I read once that when they stopped making open cockpit "airliners" (the ones with the pax cabins enclosed) and started making the closed cockpit variety, pilots complained about it because they wouldn't be able to see. I knew those guys weren't wearing those puffy coveralls, goggles etc. just to look cool!

You mean they weren't open cockpit? I remember being cold/hot/rain soaked/soaked in alcohol/soaked in 5606 - all in the cockpit. And about this time of year having more fun than the Feds allowed.
