Default UPS/SDF Questions

I couldn't decide whether these questions belong in this forum or the military one, but I noticed a lot of UPS guys here so I thougt I'd put it in this one.

I'm an AF guy from Kentucky, grew up near Louisville and never really thought too much about flying for the airlines, but flying for UPS out of SDF always seemed like it would be a sweet gig if I ever went that route. Now after sitting in a flight safety office for a year and flying 5 hours a week, followed by yet another 120 day deployment (though this one features more 5 hour a week flying--during March Madness and watching UK basketball over a crappy internet connection ), with the promise when I get back home of another year in a job outside of the squadron flying 5 hours a week, the thought of moving back home and flying for UPS seems like a dream job.

I can't even think about getting out of the Air Force until late 2014/2015, so what I've seen on here about when UPS might start hiring again looks like it could possibly line up pretty good for me. Is it possible that hiring prospects will be good for a 2500-3000 hour C-130 guy around that time?

Also, with the massive hub at SDF, is it reasonable to assume that a new UPS hire could expect to live in Louisville no problem, or is there something I'm missing that would make my dreams of living in Lousiville and having a short commute to work a pipe dream?

Finally, I'd love to continue to fly the mighty Herk with the KYANG but I've heard it's kind of a good ol' boy network. Do many of the SDF UPS guys fly with the guard there too, and how hard is it for an O-4 C-130 IP/EP to get a job there?

I appreciate any help/advice you guys have for me, thanks in advance!

If you think commuting to ANC where the junior positions are located is no problem ...

I think the most junior FO in SDF is a 2006 hire date ...

I too have always been interested in working for UPS and living in SDF. I am a 10 year mil guy and able to get out mid 2012. The pay is great. Benifits seem good, but I don't really know how they compare to SWA or FedEx. Don't know much about work rules, vacation, etc. Working out of SDF would be great but sounds like it would be a while before that would work out. Also not sure when they will be hiring, but my timing in mid 2012 probably won't work out.

It's just amazing how many people have bad things to say about working at UPS. I guess that many people can't be wrong. After reading many of the posts on here, working for UPS does not seem as attractive as it did a couple of years ago. Like I said, I have always wanted to work there but have recently decided that it may not be the best choice.

I know UPS will eventually need to hire. Any predictions on future hiring/growth timelines. Does anyone think that UPS will eventually become a better place to work?

This forum is malcontent central. If you look at the numbers, UPS has one of the best contracts out there. However, flying 2, 3, or 4 legs in the middle of the night sucks. Around 2013 is when the prior 60 turn 65 as well as the coming FAA work-rest rules in a year or so. I would think there will be some hiring around then, if not sooner.

Stay away from UPS, don't be StUPid. We have a good contract now, but the company doesn't abide by it anyway.

UPS is a great place to work unless you expect your employer to hug you, coddle you and tell you how important you are. I have a wife, Kids, and family for that crap. If you want your employer to pay you better than 99% of all the other airlines apply to UPS. We're going through some trying times right now, and a lot of guys got stuck with the short end of the stick, I thought the same thing back in 96-98 compared to my other friends who were hired at American, Delta, United etc. A few years later I'm king of the hill and they were all begging me to write them rec letters for UPS jobs. I'm in the AF Reserves, and unlike alot of guys who whine alot, UPS pilots for the most part have a good deal because of our strong and excellent union. I hear my squadron mates ***** everyday about how they are being screwed by their airlines as well, difference is I'm making alot more money at UPS than they are. As far as a Guard job in the KYNG, drive by there every now and then and introduce yourself, let them get to know you and tell them your desire to fly there, I have to guess that if your from the Louisville area then you are a "good ole boy"
Good Luck

Agree with Vito all the way. Get your hugs and kisses from your family. UPS is just a job. Nothing more. Relationships right now suck with management but this year could provide a very different twist. To hold SDF as an F/O right now figure around a late August 2005 hire date. Anything after that and you will be commuting somewhere. The two guys I know in the KYANG outfit at SDF said they are losing airframes to the active duty squadrons and are at 110% manning. Can somebody confirm?
