FedEx deviation question

Does anyone know how it works if you deviate on only one of two legs on a DH? Do they adjust the fare for your deviation bank or do you just lose all of it? Are you still protected on the scheduled DH that you retain? This is the first time I have had this opportunity.

Your deviation bank is what is printed out on the pairing.

When you deviate they will cancel both legs. If you want to take the scheduled second leg make sure you book it before you deviate, the cost may be a lot higher.

You are technically not protected on the second leg if you deviate even if it is the scheduled leg.

You should get the whole bank if you fly the trip no matter how many legs you deviate.

No- our acane deviation policy dictates that once you deviate- even if you rejoin the scheduled DH on a subsequent leg you have deviated & have no protections.

I've asked the question, and that's what an ACP stated. So even if you're standing shoulder to shoulder with the cap/fo in front of the airline gate on the sked DH and it's cnx the cap/fo who took both scheduled DH legs is protected but since you deviated on the first leg you are not- even if you're ticketed & present for the las scheduled leg.

Ridiculous but that was their answer. He did caveat it that the acp "might" be reasonable, but not to bank on it.

Provided this as one of many contract imporvement suggetstion to the Neg committee.

The policy of canceling both legs and canceling GT is all to save money and take the burden off of scheduling/crew control. This last one is a cost savings too.

The savings really add up over time. Consider the following.

- Deviators never get more than than someone on schedule
- Deviators usually get less because GTs are canceled. *
- Deviators cost less during disruptions because they are not pay protected *
- Those on schedule get more bank when ticket prices climb or on last minute xtra pairings that don't qualify for the low accepted fare for that flight *

* Big savings from deviators that are unachievable from those that stay on Schedule. Has nothing to do with reliability or "backups". If money is worth more than time to you, stay on schedule. I don't think the company will give this up willingly.

IF you can't make it and they DON'T have a service failure because they successfully covered the trip, you won't get a letter in your file. Maybe it's might not get a letter if you don't make a habit of it. Is this what you mean by "might be reasonable"? I don't think the deviator keeps the bank when you are positioning when the problems occur.

I never us the word "reasonable" to describe deviation or accepted fares. They feed it just enough to keep us deviating as much as possible.

This deviation and accepted fare fiasco started with the Fox system or whatever they called the new computer system. We used to be able to cancel individual legs but not any more. We used to get our deviation bank adjusted higher if Corp. Travel had to book at a fare higher than the accepted fare. We lost all of this with zero negotiation. It was simply taken away. Precedent had been set for a number of years. Now we have to try and negotiate it back if we ever put it high enough on the priority list.

Here is what I suggest. Never deviate on the back end. Just call and cancel any scheduled tickets with Global Travel. That way if the trip changes you are pay protected and not simply on your own. On the front end if I have a D/H to an overseas destination or a multi-leg D/H to a destination with a long expensive GT, I try to book a reservation that puts me on the scheduled final leg into the destination. I then cancel the scheduled airline ticket with Global Travel. I was promised by a previous ACP who is now on the 777 that I would always have GT at the other end if I flew the scheduled ocean crossing leg into the destination and he would make sure that I was covered if there was a failure. I even have a copy of his old email stating as such. Probably doesn't hold water now that there has been an empire change.

While I'm rambling let me also tell you that the extra nickel per hour per diem is really going a long way down here in Sydney where the exchange rate for the dollar has dropped from 1.3 AUD per US dollar to .95 AUD per US dollar! That nickel ($1.20 per day) covers the first 3 AUD I buy and then I eat the 30% drop on the rest!

I find it sadly amusing that those of us, not more than a few months ago, who were harping loudly on this forum and at work to NOT vote FOR the TA because there are real issues that we have yet to resolve, were being vigorously criticized over our lack of strategic foresight. Now as the ink is almost fully dry, someone is complaining about Deviation Policies and Accepted Fares. This is rich.

Those pompous self serving brethren who played tag team successfully obfuscating some real meaningful desent should be on this thread explaining why those issues insidiously disappeared from our CBA. If that should fail, here is another perspective. Much like the HKG FDA LOA from 4 years ago got railroaded down our throats, only to rear its ugly head demanding upgrades when this TA rolled around because those details turned out to be a little too harsh for those that bid the domicile, "Those provisions must have been good enough or you would have fought harder for improvements."

For the rest of us living in an uncertain realm of reality with regard to Deviating and Accepted Fares, we'll just have to suck it up until next time. But never let it be said that it wasn't brought up prior to the last VOTE.

Obfuscating. Seriously, just who the hell do you think you're talking to here? Remember, we're a bunch of freight dogs, not Delta or United Airlines pilots. Try using more appropriate words, preferably words with only one or two syllables, :Dwhich will allow us all to understand your comments.

It is easier to obfuscate people than to enlighten them.

FDF,

In your terse concise verbiage, you have cut me to the quick. While your comments are taken with sincere expiation, I offer you true plauditude.

Well done young man!
