Ups Dc-8

What happened to the DC-8 over at the PHL gateway? I was there last week and today, poof!, it's gone!!!

It was retired. They took some parts off for future use for other douglasauruses (engine pylons for example) and the rest is in douglas heaven.

That was FAST....7 days to chop and scrap it. I know the would probably do it, but the final disposal was kinda quick....

I was in PHL today and a gentleman at the UPS security gate told me he saw it chopped up with a giant claw, this past Saturday I think. Apparently they had difficulty breaking up the wing root section. Sounds like she fought hard until the end.

You can't beat an old iron jet. No fire or jaws of life can hurt them! Could you imagine the first all-composite jet that catches fire? It will crack up and fall apart inflight.

Won't have time to crack up. The epoxy holding it together will melt and it will delaminate before then. At least that's what happened to the composite aircraft I just saw burning up at the end of a runway.

Those giant holes melted in the fuselage were an indicator of a big blob of molten aluminium about to drop out of the sky. The crew did a great job, but lets face it, metal or composite they all burn.
