That thing disappeared quickly in PHL. I finished a trip and went back to work two days later, and it was gone.

This fire is yet another testament to the strength of the Douglas design!

Seems so disrespectful to just smash the thing up out there in the open. You'd think they could have found a hangar somewhere to stash it away and cut it up with a little dignity.

Must have been a fun job for the steamshovel operator.

I heard that UPS and the insurance company decided that the fact that this airplane was slated for retirement, it WON'T be a hull loss. It is considered an "early" retirement. If so, this keeps the "no hull loss" streak in tact, but more importantly, it keeps the insurance rates down.

On another level, it is so sad to see a great bird like the -8 get that kind of treatment. It looks like she went down fighting to the bitter end. Hopefully, some day I'll be drinking a cold beer from a can made from her aluminum!

Yeah RVR, that is a sad end to a fine machine. It doesn't look from the pictures like they salvaged the engines or anything. Would the insurance company not let them do it?
