By design. I didn't know if you are Purple, and don't think it's fair to disclose personal information to someone who's not.
It's a person who jumpseated with me from HNL to MEM, lives in HNL, flies the MD-11, and commutes to MEM. We have frequent flights, and the first leg of the trip they were commuting to was back to HNL for a layover.
So yes, it appears to be quite doable.

There are a number of pilots working for different airlines that live in Hawaii and commute.
There are also a bunch of Hawaiian Air pilots that live in the mainland and commute. It's all doable, just depends on how tolerable you find commuting. Can't speak for the FedEx schedule, but more seniority typically makes it easier to bid schedules that are easier to commute.
