FDX-MEM Block 5 Recall vote

After reading the publication of the LEC 22 Agenda for the February LEC meeting this was of interest:

4. New Business: Recall—Block 5 Representative Capt. XXXX XXXXXX

With the talk on here about Block 1 and 4, looks like we now have 3 recall efforts in play.

I know that the MEM 5 rep has been flying out of HKG for quite some time, not sure if that is the issue as he represents MEM based pilots or if there are other issues being brought forth ? Either way it is in progress.

I will first say that even though I was a rep for a while, I was never the best nuts and bolts guy on either parliamentary procedures or the ALPA manual. I usually had to dig or ask other folks for help when it came to various legalities on administrative issues.

That said, for years "council bypass" was more or less accepted practice at the union. A guy gets elected (like me) into block 7, but as his seniority moves up he moves into another block (in my case block 6). Additionally, after displacement bids, some pilots got moved around the domiciles.

What is at issue here is the fact many feel the block rep in question did not really fully disclose the fact he was going to be in a different domicile when he ran for re-election. I'm not in his block, nor LEC, and will let the membership make their own calls.

What you do need to understand is that if you seek to remove someone every time they age/progress out of a block, there will need to be more interim elections here or there. Obviously, this recall effort can be a one-time action on the part of block 5 and LEC 22. However, once you open that door expect more pressure for similar elections/recalls/calls for resignations etc whenever someone changes a domicile or moves up (or down) a block. I sort of like the idea of more new faces, more turnover, and thus more pilots with experience serving as block reps going in and out of the offices, so I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing. Point is as you crack open this egg, the whole "council bypass" issue might be something worth discussing with your reps. Put your thinking caps on, decide if rep continuity or begin a legit block member is more important to you, and make your input known. The only "wrong" answer is sitting on your ass and letting other people make all your decisions. Get involved, learn the issues and the players, and make your input.

And then...when its done...get back to work and stick together. Love your rep or hang 'em, it takes 4500 of us sticking together to get anything done. Let's get this BS over and get back to work.

All great points as usual Albie. I wish it was as simple as "growing" out of a seniority bracket. He (TC) deceived the block by even running again. First he took council bypass to represent MEM pilots when he was forced to ANC and I can live with that, then he could have bid MEM but instead chose to bid HKG and was awarded it BEFORE the election. The technicality here is that he was not "active" in HKG so he was legal to run as a MEM rep.

However, the real issue I have with him is his lack of leadership and his direct alignment with CB and TH. At least CB and TH have the stones to write to their members, anyone in block 5 go look at TC's webpage and see how many times in 4 years he has written to us. Then ask anyone you know who has witnessed him in action at MEC meetings and you have all the info you will need to make a choice.

Most of all, please get involved at the meeting on Feb. 15, CB is right YOUR UNION and YOUR VOICE.:)
