FedEx featured on NBC's RockCenter - Tonight

Tonight, FedEx will be featured on Brian Williams new show "RockCenter" on NBC at 9et.

Recently, Brian jumpseated from KEWR to KMEM on a FedEx 777, toured the hub and several operations centers before interviewing Fred Smith.

Rock Center with Brian Williams - When your Valentine's Day flowers absolutely, positively, have to be there overnight

Enjoy!

Hmmmm? So a CARGO airline transported a non-pilot, non-employee.
I WILL BET YOU THEY BROKE A FAR!!! Expect the Captian & co-pilot to receive a violation and a fine/suspension.

MD114Ever 02-15-2012 07:52 AM

We regularly take non-pilot, non-employees. It all depends on the individual's status and which FAR we are flying under.

There are also waivers that can be applied, which I believe is the most likely scenario.

HercDriver130 02-15-2012 08:38 AM

My company issues flight deck passes to couriers, and customer reps occasionally. I see nothing wrong with this.

Yo SNAP, I wouldn't worry about it. Heck, next thing you know, FedEx will start allowing animal attendants to fly on their a/c.

BTW, word in the hub is spelling instruction is now part of the Captain's Course.

Overnitefr8 02-15-2012 09:28 AM

Did all the senior mgmt types have to fly Brian Williams down, or did they let a regular line crew fly it?

I'm guessing the seniors flew this flight. After all, they flew the panda why not the MSM? The real question - did they wear kilts?:D

as you would expect.....the usual criminals.......no kilts, though......

don't they ever get sick of the "hey, look at me and what I'm doin'" gig??

sheesh:rolleyes:

Perm11FO 02-15-2012 03:59 PM

Hmmmm..... so what happens if the Capt & FO on that flight DO get a license suspension??? Where would we go from there?

IslanderDriver 02-15-2012 08:37 PM

I'd guess, like most 121 airlines, the VP of Flight Ops can approve anyone to ride on the jump seat.

SKYKN6 02-15-2012 09:44 PM

Rock Center with Brian Williams Very nice 12 minute piece. Use this link and click on the story. ( I THOUGHT I recognized the 2 dress wearers by the back of their heads!)

frozenboxhauler 02-15-2012 10:04 PM

Well done, Mr. Smith!

HeavyJet 02-15-2012 10:55 PM

Wow to have a CEO like that. I do feel for you guys the day that he leaves and some POS bean counter takes over.

R1200RT 02-16-2012 03:59 AM

It's in your contract that management pilots fly high profile and publicity flights. Just saying…….
I guess it keeps guys with black sneakers, yellowish shirts, and Dockers off the TV.

fdxdispatchguy 02-16-2012 04:17 AM

Plus, after the checks, wouldnt the FAA have to sign off on Brian riding jumpseat in any event?

No FARs were broken.

Jetjok 02-16-2012 04:22 AM

What a nice article. Really presented the company in a human way. As for when Fred Smith leaves, I for one believe that the company will do just fine, because of the corporate culture that he's instilled in it over the years. That said, hopefully after he retires, they won't bring in someone from the outside to run the place, but will instead, promote someone who knows both the people and the business.

Very nice piece. Kudos to you guys!

744driver 02-16-2012 06:39 AM

It was a good piece on TV last night...I forwarded the link to my family and friends that wonder when I'll ever become a "commercial" pilot. My usual answer, "I can't afford the pay cut"...and of course, they look at me incredulously.

I also sent it so they can understand (in an easy to understand video) what it is we freight dogs do...

Thanks for the link...and nice story after the delivery-guy video made the rounds before the Xmas rush.

I just put my MBA cap on. So why does Fred need the free advertising?

Because it is FREE:)

You've got an MBA? Maybe you can get your money back!:p

Why would I want my money back?

Most MBA's would assume that free positive advertising is good.

BizPilot 02-16-2012 08:20 AM

Well, by now everyone knows the FEDEX story. And then you have the opportunity cost of Fedex making Fred's time and others available for the video.

FDXLAG 02-16-2012 08:29 AM

Would your MBA hat not want to take a swipe at the rogue driver on youtube?

If you have to ask....

FdxPylot 02-16-2012 12:39 PM

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Smith and I loved at the end how he talked about Family/Friends being more important then any job. I've only been at FedEx for a little over 5 years, but I know this is instilled in the culture. I've had two family incidents during that time and FedEx went out of their way to help. Not many companies will say...we won't call you, you call us when things are better, take care of what you need to take care of and we hope to see you back at work soon. Great company and I'm very proud to be a part of it all.

Hey Mav, You got the number of that truck-driving school? Because if you don't understand the value of FREE, Positive publicity, then perhaps you need a refresher course, or truck-driving school.

Well, then it wasn't free advertising by your own statements.

Since you are an MBA, you can pop that HP12C out and figure out how much an 11 minute commercial would sell for on a primetime show. You also can factor in that NBC shouldered the production costs. If you don't think part of a CEO's duties involve the occasional 30 minute meetings to promote the company, then I don't think you are ready for that job.

It seems incredulous that you earned an MBA without a solid understanding of marketing.

Maybe he had a pet gerbil with him and was officially an animal handler. :D

I thought it was a good piece. And a good way to repair the damage done by that delivery guy chucking the computer over the fence.
Or at least put it out there. Hard to undo.

990Convair 02-21-2012 05:39 AM

FedEx

I saw the Brian Williams piece and I thought it was great. As for the corporate culture here, just helped a bud get hired and after the winging ceremony he said "for the first time in my life I am actually proud of the company I work for".

We (FedEx'ers) may banter back and forth on here and moan and groan about this and that, but when the dust settles this is one of the best airlines (the best IMO) in the world to work for and I am proud to say I'm here too, after 16 years.

Flightmech 02-21-2012 06:07 AM

I didn't see Wilson listed as one of the 4 jumpers on that flight either?:D Great piece on the company though.

FDXLAG 02-21-2012 07:48 AM

I am glad Wilson was there, had brian gone down in flyover country he would have been more lost than Tom Hanks on his deserted island. Five years later he would be regaling the incredulous folks at 30 rock with tales of natives with guns and 48 stickers in their truck windows.
