UPS Called Today!

UPS called today for a class! You DO NOT have to do a medical any more, just a drug test. They said I will be in the NOV. 16th class. If that fills up I will be in the DEC. 14th class. Of course this is contingent on passing the drug test and background checks. I do not know how big these classes are. I swam in the pool for 2 1/2 months.

Old Coastie 10-19-2006 07:47 AM

Congrats topdog. Good luck in your new carreer. "Fair winds and following seas."

v2plus25 10-19-2006 08:00 AM

Congrats on the call Topdog!!!

My advice is to get that drug test done ASAP. Putting it off for even a few days might cost you a slot in that Nov 16th class.

MightyHuron 10-19-2006 08:46 AM

Congrats on the class call!

I concur with getting the drug test done ASAP. Don't waste another...moment.

Once the negative results come back expect a call from HR with lots of details on your upcoming class, probably including aircraft seat and domicile preferences.

frozenboxhauler 10-19-2006 09:11 AM

Congratulations!, ya dun gud. Welcome to the Order of the Sleepless Knights.
Blue skies and tail winds always,

bman0429 10-19-2006 11:16 AM

When did you interview and what were your quals?

C17MooseDriver 10-19-2006 12:17 PM

Cograts TOPDOG,

Was wondering if you had internal recs? Rumors going around you don't need one right now with UPS.

I'm separating from the military and was just wondering since I through in my UPS apps a couple of weeks ago with knowing anyone in UPS.

1800 RVR 10-19-2006 01:24 PM

Congrats TOPDOG! Welcome aboard!

JetJocF14 10-19-2006 01:29 PM

Congrats on your call-up to the show. If you don't like coffee you will by the end of your career.

Beagle_Lover 10-19-2006 01:51 PM

Congrats...I am hoping for a phone call myself, to interview!

True statement. Internal recs are not required, although they still are highly valued.

Topdog,

Just curious what was your background?

C17Moosedriver,
I too am a c17 driver, rumor is that HR is putting C17 and KC-10 pilots at the top of the rankings because they want to fill MD-11 slots with pilots who have some familiarity with the MD-11, and C-17/KC-10 pilots fill the bill, Good Luck

fly2ski 10-19-2006 07:47 PM

Drew was Navy, although both services use that saying. Good luck Tdog.

Many 727 pilots at UPS fly around 100-150 hours per year. Reserve on that a/c is the way to go if you want UPS to be a few days per month, part-time job. The downside? You have to live in Louisville.

At what point does C-17 help? After the internal rec? I'm looking to fly cargo on the civilian side for a change.

Sdf?

Why do you think the 727 reserve guy has to live in SDF? You can still sit reserve in SDF (in the crash pad) and commute home when your days are finished. Just curious why you think one would need to live in base for 72 reserve.

Why would you commute to live in a crashpad?

Perhaps, because one has a life at home (in another city) with a wife who is happy with her life and job and kids who like their school and friends. (not to mention the great golf courses locally!)

I was just asking to hear their reason why, that's all.

Vito 10-23-2006 03:48 AM

lizardtobarney,

I don't know, I was just told that the higher-ups at UPS like guys with KC-10 and C-17 experience. The C-17 is a little baffling since we know it has very little in common with an MD-11, however maybe the systems or system logic is similar. Bottom line Rumor has it thet UPS wants pilots who have flown the heavy jets, worldwide, and those with McDonnel Douglas experience ie. KC-10/C-17 are put to the top of the list. Just a rumor I heard.

C17MooseDriver 10-24-2006 02:53 PM

Vito,

Well I've had my apps in for a few weeks without a call. Currently working on trying to get a rec. If it was on top of the list, you'd figure they'd call.

EDPM 10-24-2006 05:22 PM

Don't sit on the edge of your seat...

Wow...that's high expectations. Most people have their stuff in with UPS for years before they get a call.

Beagle_Lover 10-24-2006 06:23 PM

Yep....6 years and counting for me! Some are lucky and get the call right away some not so lucky.

C17MooseDriver 10-25-2006 02:39 PM

I was just addressing VITO saying that C-17 and KC-10 pilots were on top of the UPS hiring list. I

If the rumor was true, then great, but I somehow don't believe it to be.

It's not a rumor. Don't be so arrogant to think that it is C-17/KC-10 pilots though. They are seeking out folks with heavy experience and that does not just include the C-17/KC-10. They are calling folks for interviews who have no recs. Now is the time to make your resume stand out and get the application updated if you have the heavy time. Current UPS pilots, myself included, do not want to go to ANC and we do not have the financial incentive to do so like FDX does (single payscale.)

There will be a lot of brand new 747-400s and MD-11s in ANC and the company needs to hire into the right seat for those planes.

overspeed 10-26-2006 05:00 AM

Question.

I know I'll probably sound like an arrogant idiot, but it wouldn't be my first time. What's the big deal/difference in flying a heavy versus say a smaller jet like a CRJ or something? I guess there's some different things to think about when you're a couple thousand miles from any fuel stops...

C17MooseDriver 10-26-2006 06:13 AM

Again, I was addressing VITO's previous comment. I wasn't saying C-17s/KC-10s were on the top of their list, he was. I wasn't trying to come off as arrogant.

The Maddog has a horrible safety record. If your not careful it can bite you in the a$$. Normal ref speed is around 165kts. With NO tail wind you are right at 900-1000 fpm on a 3.0 degree glidepath. You can see how it can get away from you pretty fast (stabalized approach criteria).

Also, it has a computer to help run your horizontal stab. They took the DC10 and cut a bunch of stab off to help meet efficiency requirements. The last 50' can get a little hairy as you start to lose elevator effectiveness.

Not to mention the over water quals.

Not sure about the -400 though.

Otherwise, any of the other fleets I would agree with what you said.

birdstrike 10-26-2006 03:47 PM

Nice going TOPDOG, welcome aboard.
