It always took 2 pilots. The other guys were accessory functions that have been replaced by computers that the 2 pilots now manage. But theres always been 2 pilots... and probably will be long after all our careers are over.

The Iranians just recently proved they're willing and able to use meaconing and intrusion.
In December, they jacked one of our most sophisticated stealth UAVs, the RQ-170 Sentinel. Remember that? If they could do that to our finest in the Air Force, imagine what they could do to civilians with Off The Shelf technology.
I don't ever see the FAA allowing remote controlled wide-body jets over the United States. Too much risk.
Besides, would you get into the back of a pilotless A380 for a trip of any length? The risks even scare me enough not to do it, and I fly 747s for a living.
Even if the FAA allowed it, the flying public would never go for it.

After the UAV's have been flying for a while with one ground based pilot per UAV, the bean counters will cry for even more efficiency. Why not two, three, four or move UAV's under one "pilots" control?? Give that a little time and Apple will have developed a computer to do all the flying (and thinking
) and you will only need a high school graduate computer tekkie to occasionally reboot an insolent computer!! Oh the future!!

Yeah, because there are no stand-along navigation systems that could provide the required backup like IRS/INS, fall-back logic, etc....All reasons why it may take longer, but also why it's comming.

Let's think back a short 20 years. I was building my retirement home as I got ready to leave the Air Force. Had to drive half a mile from the construction site to the Circle K and put a quarter in the pay phone to talk with anyone. Where was my cell phone? Ordering materials, text messages would be nice. Emails would help a bunch. Driving to Atlanta to get some materials for the house. Wish I could find that warehouse. Where is my dash mounted GPS?
Day off; looking for Tom Clancy's latest book. Guess I need to go the mall. Where is my Kindle/IPAD? Wife and I went out to dinner at the Officer's Club. Need to cash a check at the cashiers cage. (Mentioned this to our daughter-in-law: she asked "how do you cash a check and why would you cash a check?")
The list goes on and on of the new technologies that have been developed in just the past few years. Never say never!!!
