Okay guys I'll bite. Post your squadrons for both UPT and your 135 unit and I'll bet someone on this board will either know you or can put you in touch with someone who knows you that's at FedEx or UPS. Don't post your name because they can PM you if they can help. FedEx has representation from every Active, Reserve, and Guard unit and I'm sure multiple people know you.

Internal Hiring:

FedEx has a policy of giving preference to its own employees before hiring from outside of the company. If you are a permanent employee, part-time or full-time, and qualified for a particular job, you will be considered before anyone "off the street" is considered.

If you are a courier, or handler, or customer service representative, or master coffee maker, and you meet the qualifications for "Crewmember", you will get an interview. One qualification that is often overlooked and that could be troublesome is "recency of experience." If you're unable to maintain recency of experience while being the master coffee maker, you don't qualify for the interview after all.

So, it's a sure thing (guaranteed interview), but it's also a gamble. Suppose you accept the master coffee maker position tomorrow, and this weekend discover that your UPT table mate is a Chief Pilot at FedEx and will bring you in for an interview before Thanksgiving. Whoops. You have this little 1-year commitment as the master coffee maker to fulfill before he can call you in for an interview. When you take the "I'll-do-anything-to-get-an-interview" job, you're really putting a lot of your eggs in that one basket.

I recommend you work as hard as possible on the network side of the equation to start off. The Internal route is an option, but it's not without risk. Even if you get the interview, there's no guarantee you'll get the job. That would be a very discouraging way to end a year of coffee making.

Good luck!

I had a coffee maker (okay...an avionics tech) in my new hire class. It took him 3 tries...

Being internal does not equal automatic. Because you are "guaranteed" an interview if you meet the mins, I think they might even look at you with MORE scutiny...

However you get here--great people, great jets, some really hard trips and some cakewalks too. I can't imagine being happier flying anywhere else. Good luck!

Shaggy,

Because you're still in the military, why not call up and apply for a flying job at the Tenn. ANG. They happen to be almost co-located with FedEx at KMEM, and I'd venture to say that at least 75% of those guys fly for us at FedEx. It would give you some additional income, both now and if you're smart, you'll stick it out for a retirement. Anyway, that might be a way to get a recommendation. But as posted before, I'd bet you know some guys who are already on the seniority list. You just gotta find them. Good Luck.

Default Thanks

Just wanted to say thanks for the words from all of you that have responded. I got a call from American Eagle yesterday. They wanted to know if I was intrested in a job. They don't pay anything but I am going to need food at the end of December. I don't know what to do! I figure it won't hurt to interview, maybe learn a few things about the process. Thoughts?

Just my opinion, I'd take it for now. FedEx will hire you if you're working for a regional. It will keep you current, and give you some options. Find the guys in your squadron who fly for FedEx or UPS and keep the networking going. At very worst case it will give you an interview experience just to make you that much better for where you want to fly.

Shaggy,
Take the interview. It shows UPS/Fedex you really want to fly. Teaches you about commercial flying, puts peanut butter on the table till move up. I did that in 93 leaving active duty. Flew at COEX for 3 years until hired at UPS. I was always 'next in line' with my Fedex buds. I enjoyed my commuter, now regional time as a EMB-120 right rider. No money, but I learned alot about what companies I wanted to work for at the time (Fedex/UPS) with Southwest as the only pax company. I enjoyed the people as well.
P.S. I'll bet you know someone at Fedex/UPS, maybe an IP from UPT or the RTU.

Default Thanks Salty

My apps have been in now for about a month. Comair, American Eagle, and sprint have called. None of the majors yet but still crossing my fingers. A buddy who put his apps in with southwest in sep got a call last week to show up for an interview. It gives me hope. If nothing turns up by my seperation date I will take any kind of flying job to stay current. I am not scared yet but might be soon.

I hate to do this, but I need someone to start making sense of all of this. What would be more effective? If I have the recommendations, do I not have to wait in the 10,000 man line? Also, I am a handler, what would it take for me to meet the recency of experience? I'm only 21 and working on commercial multi, but I feel that if i dont bust my A@@ to try and get in early that it'll never work out. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks

FxFan,
I don't know too much about the topic at hand, as I am new too all this. What I do know is that with Fedex more so than UPS its about who you know and who they know and what they can do for you. I put my apps in a month ago with both and just got an interview offer at UPS. I didn't know a single contact nor anyone in the company. I guess they liked what they saw in my resume, I really don't know. If I can land a job with either it would be awsome but unless your networking right now and meeting people that fly with Fedex you might never get a call from them, no matter how good you are. Just my 2 cents.
