Default Home Basing Question

Guys....

Can someone explain the Home Basing Concept to me w/r to someone who prefers to be based outside the US....Canada or somewhere in South America for example (put in any country other than the US here) and what the airline (Atlas in particular) policy is regarding this?

Thanks

Kap

Atlas does not have home basing, it uses a hybrid system of assigned bases with company provided transport between a list of "gateways" and the base. In practice, for most people, this is their home to their base. It is a little odd, to be honest.

The Atlas gateway system does not work outside of the United States.

EDIT: Clarified that "gateway" is not always "home".

Atlas does not have home basing. Pilots are assigned to a specific base. Travel is provided from (and back to) your "gateway" airport (as you specify), as required. Gateway airports are U.S. only. I live in the U.S., so I'm not completely fluent on how to commute from overseas. As I understand it, the folks who commute from outside the U.S. must get to a gateway airport on their own and then continue with company paid travel.

Hey, 742Dash was answering at the same time...

We have home basing at K4....but if you live outside the US or Alaska and Hawaii, you must designate a resident airport. The company will get you to and from the resident airport. FWIW, we have crew members currently living in Canada, several Caribbean Islands, Brazil, South Africa, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia and maybe one or two more.

At World Airways the home basing entailed designating a "home airport", which could be changed monthly if wanted. It had to be in the 48 States and within 200 miles or so of US border in Canada. (Cover most big cities there.)

Some guys "lived" in other places. Central America, Philippines, etc. but had to get to their home airport. Of course lots didn't officially live elsewhere, ie were not legal permanent residents. But that's a whole other issue.
