Go ahead and laugh...FedEx 747-800
I know we have all been around this way to many times...but, from a source Boeing is trying to get an oder from FedEx of up to 40 B747-800???
Let the laughter begin...but something will have to replace the 380 orders and the 777 aint going to do it...
Mark mentioned the A340...so we might be seeing a 4 engine aircraft on the ramp before to long???

As the guy that is only allowed to poor coffee, I am still learning the cargo airline business, as I came from the pax side. Can someone explain the big deal about the "open space" on the 747, and why it is so bad? It is always mentioned as a negative to the 747, and I understand the advantage of the 380 with the three decks. If we need lift it seems like the next best thing would be the 747. I know we had 747s from Tigers and they didn't work for whatever reason, but the airline is a different airline currently. For what it is worth, I am a June 05 new hire and we were told the 400s were a done deal until Airbus offered a great deal on the the 380s.
Thanks in advance!

While large, the 747 isn't very effective with the standard cans up in the front 20 or so feet of the nose. With the stairs up to the upper deck there is a large area of space restricted to palletized cargo or smaller cans.
A 777 might actually be a more effective option for you guys. My understading is that the aircraft often run out of volume before they run out of weight (I could be very, very wrong here). A 777 would be longer, and without the steps you'd have cargo space for the full length and width aft of the crew area and the "lounge" behind the cockpit that the widebodies have.

Actually that is true with most of our Aircraft.......we bulk out before we gross out.
There are a few exceptions to that rule, our very long haul flights.
FDX needs and A/C that can Non Stop from China to MEM and PARIS and carry 180-220 thousand LBS of cargo. The MD-11 can't do it. The 777F apparently (almost) can.
Just a guess but if you bid the 777. I hope you like Paris and Guanghou layovers cuz I suspect that is about all you will do.

Someone showed me the numbers one time but I may be wrong here. In the FedEx world of bean counters, those numbers I think were around 10-14% of cargo space that would be unusable on a 747 because of the way our containers are constructed. At least, that's what I remember.
Also, the DoD likes the front end loading capability of the whale so they can use drive aboards -- if we use MD's or DC10's it's all palletized. That was one of the reasons I had heard alot of our mil charters get wet-leased to whale driving outfits.
I had also heard that FS once said that you cannot make money with 4 engine jet aircraft...... but what does he know, right?
