I've got a 2000 Ford Focus and the only time it has let me down in over 8 years has been a fuel pump going bad. Not surprising how much the thing sits - it is 13 years old with about 60,000 miles on it. Maintenance is dirt cheap Ford basic stuff otherwise.

Plus it is in-freaking-visible in Memphis.

And back when I needed it to, it made 6-hour drives to DFW without a hitch. Haven't tried that in a few years, but I bet it would make it now.

Ahhhhhhh.........we don't say "Jap" anymore. Ever since the 80's when they nearly had enough money to buy us, and we stopped making anything (in the US) that is electronic. Oh ya, while we're at it, Chink also is a no go now that the Chinese buy (and make ) our I phones and they allow us to ship this stuff on our planes so we can also buy it.

As for the Germans, unless you need them to diagnose some problem on your Beemer or Benz, they can still be Krouts.

How about a 1996 Ford Aspire. Mines gets 35mpg and has taken me to 3 domiciles coast to coast to coast. Cost me $1800 in 03 and have only put $700 in to her for tires, brakes and a fan belt

Never has left me in the middle of nowhere.

God don't buy one of those (Benz/ Volvo)! ^^^ One carburetor rebuild, starter motor, tune up, or tranny repair and all your savings are gone.

A somewhat well kept secret is the Korean automaker Hyundai-Kia, models like "Accents" are dirt cheap and have similar reliability as traditional Japanese models. Consumer Reports loves them, they are not sexy but they are wonderful crew cars. A beauty like this could be yours for about $100.

Nah that's even worse! Diesel work on anything is way more expensive, as are the parts for either one of those. Very poor way to "save money".

Really? I drive a 2000 VW Jetta TDI 5 speed that I paid $1500 for almost 3 years ago. 500 miles RT twice a month at 43-48 MPG. It paid for itself quickly and now is paying me. It had 180k on it when i bought it and it will do 500k + easy.

Those diesel mercs will run past 500k miles with basic maintenance, the volvo could probably do the same. Parts are dirt cheap, and widely available.

Now I get it. All these people driving worn looking Corollas are the real rich people, while the poor are forced to settle for any diesel Mercedes or Volvo they can afford.
