Excess Bid?
#21
I suspect some over 62 year old Capts will bid HKG for passover....but they don't intend to actually go.

For us newbs, can someone explain what -1 means? Shrink the bidpack by 10 percent or something? Thanks. Sounds like more training for the junior guys, just another chance to excel. yay....

Hypothetical -
If there were to be a total excess (from the 727) and -1 in the MEM MD11 FO, ANC MD11 FO, LAX MD11 FO, and MEM A300 FO seats, we have a bump and flush situation. If 727 pilots go to those seats we will also have an excess out of those seats.
So even if you didn't want to go to the 767, if faced with 757 vs. 767, you may end up bidding it.
It's too early to panic. I predict any flushes to seats that aren't where they want to herd the mice will be significantly delayed and will overlap with the next bid. Seats where they want you may be delayed too, but just long enough so you're in training at the close of the next bid.
Remember, Bid what you want to fly

The 72 guys have to go somewhere. The put in an excess (-1 is all it takes) in every seat but 75 since its the lowest paying seat. So they take the MD11, for example, and say instead of 600 FOs we need 599. All 72 guys go into other bidbacks at what their seniority can hold, and guys at the bottom who are over that number get flushed. It usually has a cascading effect, since many Capts get flushed back to FO.

I would be surprised if they flushed CAs this time.
They may not flush anyone but 727 crew members with the 727 excess bid. The next excess may do that out of only one or two other seats if the 727 pilots don't go where they want them. Those two quick excess bids may be closely followed by a small vacancy bid for 757/767/777 and possibly some CA seats.
Now that I've made a prediction the plan will be much different.

When there is a -1, people get to bid to relieve the excess. Those are processed before involuntary excesses.
Bids to relieve give the company a headache even if there is a -1 in EVERY seat they don't want additional crew members in. Management might be forced to train people they don't want to move. But this may be inevitable if all the 727 FOs, for example, want to be Airbus FOs and bottom Airbus FOs dream of being MD11 FOs AND no one bids to relieve.
I think a CA bid is around the corner so those bidding to relieve into a CA seat may be desired. I'm sure standing bids are being analyzed.

If they did a giant excess bid wouldn't the passover pay go up incredibly? Why wouldn't anyone with a seniority greater than 3358 (junior HKG CA) bid it? So far I think about 2 guys have actually had to go and if you're junior, recent bids would show that you have almost zero chance of activating. How much is the Company paying in POP right now? About 100 guys at a $50k differential, $5million a year. ??

Are you speaking for the entire FedEx pilot group or you're just trying to protect your personal interest? No body would get hurt if narrow body pay goes up to wide body pay. There most likely would be an initial crew shuffle, but that may happen anyway you you guys parking the 727.
