UPS Pay

Can someone tell me how UPS pays their pilots. I thought they did not differentiate between aircraft types. Thanks.

lolwut 05-16-2013 11:22 AM

Apparently they pay them in Butthurt.

You are correct - all acft pay the same dependent only on seat position and seniority. APC has the scales published along with all the other airlines.

The butthurt is why we don't feel we are compensated nearly enough... ;-)

Usually through payroll direct deposit, with checks that don't bounce.;) Now (you UPS guys) stop your complaining, although unlike some here, I actually do understand why you do it. It's why I left UPS back in 1990 for greener pastures. Who knew? Because as many have said, you really can't judge your decision until after you retire.

Longevity, not seniority, is it not?

At a stagnent company, or one with furloughed pilots and the most junior having years on property but no seniority, people sometimes think they are synonymous.

Jetjok, care to mention where you went after UPS and who you retired from. 1990 the UPS air side (if I remember) was still in its infancy or at least still expanding

Correct, I should have said longevity vice seniority, thanks. They are definitely not synonymous.

You're right, the airline was still somewhat in it's infancy (on the union side, we voted out the teamsters and started the IPA in April of '90). At that time, and for most if not all of the year, we were hiring 30 pilots a month.

Jetjok 05-16-2013 01:00 PM

Sure. I left UPS after the IPA was voted in and went to FedEx. I retired from there this past September. One of my fond memories from new hire class at UPS was the guy from Loss Prevention telling us how the company would prosecute us if we were caught stealing. This right after the VP of flight ops telling us that we'd never have to look for another job and that we'd all retire as millionaires. We took a break after the hour-long talk from the LP guy, and I remember going down to the cafeteria and calling my former employer to ask if I could come back to work there. Needless to say, UPS and I were not a good fit.

No. I was someone who came from a company which treated their employees with dignity and respect and was so disheartened by that particular speech that I knew at that moment that UPS was not my kind of place. And over the next year or so, realized my first impression was spot on.

LOL. I remember during that same timeframe, (April '90) they (UPS) took our DC-8 newhire class out to the ramp to see some of the airplanes. One guy who had been flying pax charters for some outfit previously took one look at our DC-8 lav and quit on the spot. I kid you not. Guess he knew what he wanted, or didn't want right then and there.

Ha! I remember the same feeling after leaving TWA for FedEx. It was just odd to see no seats but just a beat up hull. But I stuck with it and 22 years later I'm still feeling I got lucky. As far as flying freighters, (and as a former truck driver) if I was stuck on the ground, I'd rather be in a Peterbilt than a Greyhound.

Thanks for the replies. I started at UPS in 1990 as well and left after a few weeks to return to my previous job. Now I find myself on the bottom of the United list after all these years. Is the union still the in house one?

highsky 05-16-2013 03:33 PM

It's true. We get paid exclusively by years of service, and the number of stripes on your sleeve. We do not have "Differences" Pay, like most all other pilots have.

Differences pay sucks if you are junior. In the UPS/IPA CBA, we have more pilots getting well compensated, versus only a few guys flying the big iron.

All out of due respect to our furloughed brothers, whom aren't being compensated dick.

I'm coming up on six years at UPS, and still haven't had a year of full Pay. New hire pay, RDG, Layoff..... If I still have a job in July, it will be the first year.

A little thread creep sorry....

Buggs, I hear ya, but lets not forget you are employed.

And the purpose of this thread was???? APC publishes the pay rates on their website. Seat and Seniority, and those are not synonymous with longevity.

Coming on THREE YEARS!

Carry on..........

Yes it is, the IPA (Independent Pilots Association). The best thing we ever did was breaking off from the Teamsters and forming our own in-house union. It's what makes working for UPS tolerable.
