Back in the greenscreen bulletin board days, there was ACMTOP10Q&A ... or something like that. Mechanics used it to ask management questions, and sometimes they'd get answers, but mostly they'd just talk amongst themselves. Some of the more outspoken ones eventually became organizers.

They were complaining in 2001 about the pilots who had taken the jumpseats away from them. At that time, they couldn't even ride in the back. Of course, pilots had nothing to do with it, but management was content to let them be angry at the pilots. It's always better for one employee group to be angry at another than for that same employee group to be mad at management.

They don't let me post there anymore. ;)

Thank you. Another sign of the maturity level up there.

It was a Gulfstream 1, windshield heat. It's primary purpose is to bird proof the windshield. It's not deferrable.

Funny it is defferrable on the A300 on the FOs side.

1st I got no say in the matter.

2nd This is not about letting cool dudes or uncool dudes get a ride. This is primarily about complying with the FARs and the power play by the company. You are taking it personal and it is just business. There is one set of rules for pilots to request the jumpseat and another for everyone else.

Ok, so it would be alright to leave windshield heat "off" on an A300?

What is your problem? Is English a second language for you?

And it would be OK for a jumpseater to not interrupt the Captain during takeoff. Especially, when it's a non safety of flight issue.

"I recall riding jumpseat in a G159, I knew the aircraft quite well. The crew had missed a preflight checklist item and as the pilot was advancing the throttles for take off I asked if the windshield heat was supposed to be on."

Could this have waited till a less critical phase of flight?

Ha! It's a "No Go" item on the G-1, throttles weren't up to take off power when I brought it to their attention... even got a "thank you" ;)
