Congratulations on your health. That is great to read. I must disagree with you opinion however. I have found flying the 747 to be one of the easiest job I have had in aviation. You are right that the check ride is not real world. The real world is much easier.

When it comes to non physical labor positions such as Physicians and Pilots, age is just a number. The over physical and mental health, cognitive skills, attitude and experience is what makes the difference.

I am a much better 747 pilot than a new hire straight out of a CRJ FO seat, and will be for many years. That pilot is quicker and better looking for sure, but lacks the experience I bring to the table.
