I'll have to take a closer look at the APS. I was under the impression that the flap setting is not selectable. Weights, runways, etc., can drive the APS to give a different flap setting in the output, but I was not aware that the setting is pilot-selectable as an input. If it is, I am mistaken.

(Having just finished I/T/U and IOE, I probably shouldn't make such a public confession. I'll take a look on my Validation Ride tomorrow.)

All the other ... yepp, I agree.

Mark - I'm curious, how do YOU change the flap setting? That's news to me too.

Fair disclosure ...

I'm out on medical leave (SCK/DSA/LTD) and I'll admit it, I haven't flown since last November. I "think" it was selectable on the old PAT. Since I'm out sick I haven't seen (and have not received) a nice new iPad. I'll be disappointed if it isn't still an option

15/0 is a normal takeoff. It has been driven by the PAT at BOG quite often. I've been using it since I first got wind that we were going that direction and yes you can change the flap setting in the PAT. Rotation forces are lighter, but if you've been using 3° per second it isn't a problem. I've been amazed at how some folks yank the jet off the runway. Not saying this crew did that. I did see that there was minimal damage. Basically inspected aircraft and repainted the skid. Hopefully that will mitigate any discipline. Probably a sim ride to practice 15/0.

Can't speak for all aircraft but on the Bus it's selectable for all available flap setting...15/0, 15/15, 15/20. Always has been and still is that way. The only change was the default is 15/0.

I've been doing 15/0 takeoffs since it was announced it would change to the default setting about 6 or 8 weeks ago. It's always been available, just most folks didn't take advantage of using it. Most people probably have done it in the Sim in the last year taking off out of Bogota. If not, then they should have.

I actually prefer using 15/0. I like the extra speed off the runway and the increased climb gradient. It does lighten the forces required for rotation, particularly with an aft CG. However, it is not that big of a deal, just don't yank it off the deck, get it started up and then let it pretty much continue on its on until it starts to slow down a little. Everyone's done these and some time during training so they should be aware of this. It may shorten the stop margin more than I like, and if so I just change it to 15/20. If anyone bumped freight because 15/0 gave too little stop margin and didn't know they could change it, then they need to get back in the books and become a little more professional. Hopefully, it was only because the climb gradient required 15/0, not because they didn't know they could change it.

Shying away from doing these is not the answer since you may end up in a situation that requires it due to climb gradient. I have seen this on a very hot day out of Boise.

From the Airbus PHS:

<18> Takeoff Flap Preference: Allows selection of 20, 15, or 0 Flaps.

I've never tried it, but the preference looks selectable.
