Twin engined MD-11?

Newest rumor I heard the other night in the AOC. Apparently Fred and the BOD doesn't like the price tag of the 777 with Asia slowing, so they are thinking of removing the #2 engine on the MD-11 and refitting #1 and #3 with GE90s. Sort of a poor man's 777. Maybe they could do the same with the MD-10? Thoughts?

Heard the exact same rumor about the 72 and yet we retired them; and that was a good airplane.;)

For the record, Dee Howard wanted to do the same thing for a 727 and get rid of the FE. The Feds said do whatever you want. However they pointed out the type certificate data sheet for a 727 said it had three engines and required an FE. Missing either of these it would not be a 727 and would have to certified as a totally new type of aircraft, not just a mod. You ever see any 2 engine FE-less 727s flying?

As long as we are looking at the historical record I suspect FDX may pay Boeing the equivalent cost of a new 76 in order to modify exsisting MD-10s and 11s.

That's all those wing spars need.

More weight on them.
