Cargo Airship

From Dec13/Jan14 issue of Air Cargo World. Another article said 18 hours from LA to NYC.....cruising speed is 174 mph. No mention whether it would be manned or not.

Numerous thoughts;

- What's the required ATC aircraft spacing at LAX & JFK on an 18mph vehicle? Does it slow down to 9mph for "final approach speed"?

- Your second link says a prototype should be finished by 2010 ... I guess I better hurry up and retire

- Talk about "short field capability"! Do they land at the correct airport or just one in the same city?

- Are they limited to 5lb packages like the Amazon octocopters?

I want to be #1 on the dirigible seniority list.

Spur 12-07-2013 03:03 PM

I wonder how that thing holds up in -FZRAPL...

KSCessnaDriver 12-07-2013 03:09 PM

This thing will never work. Coming from an LTA background and now flying cargo in the 135 world, I really feel that the two will never go together. They are too slow and much to vulnerable to weather to be used regularly in the domestic market.

I'll bet the crapper and the jumpseats are in the cockpit.

Packrat 12-07-2013 03:46 PM

Heck, the Capt. probably has his own cabin.

Excerpt from the 2018 contract:

C. Hourly Rates of Pay
1. Hourly Rates – Effective First Day of March 2018 Bid Period

4 1249.53 1157.26
5 1250.51 1160.39
6 1251.51 1163.59
7 1252.54 1166.87
8 1253.53 1170.21
9 1254.52 1173.61
10 1257.47 1178.46
11 1260.44 1183.45
12 1263.43 1188.60
13 1265.40 1189.56
14 1268.04 1190.50
15 1270.73 1191.92

And................excerpt from the grievance decision that follows shortly:

In reaching our decision it is clear that the plain and unambiguous language of section 2. Compensation, buttress the Company’s interpretation. The Association negotiated pay rates for a Cargo Airship. The Board agrees that the vehicles purchased are actually Dirigibles. This decision is supported by the pictures of the Hindenburg supplied by Company counsel. Further, since the Dirigible purchase was cancelled shortly after the implementation of this current agreement, we recommend that the Dirigible pay-rates be included in all further agreements since those rates cost the Association significant negotiating capital to achieve.

The Board finds the Associations pay-rate protest is without merit.

The grievance and pay-rate protest is denied.
