Default Why FedEx 777s in PANC?

Just out of curiosity, why do I see Purple 777s in Anchorage? I thought the FedEx strategy was to bypass PANC? Do the 777s stop going eastbound, westbound, or both ways?

The 15 hour flights are too fatiguing for mgmt pilots. They have to make a pit stop.

My bet is IOE (more landings) and training up ground crews/gateways.

Or the geezers really missed F Street that much.

I believe the cost per pound makes it less costly to carry more with a stop. Not all cargo is so time sensitive that it needs the few hours it saves by bypassing ANC.

If it's flying ANC-EWR, it's a new aircraft building the required hours before it can go ETOPS.

Heard it was a customs issue. Backlog in memphis means freight can clear in ANC and go onto MEM quicker than direct MEM. Also heard more 777 flights will be inbound to IND for same reason

Default the real answer....maybe

It requires two 777s to provide service to each city therefore it requires a pair of new 777s to start service at a new 777 destination. Because they are not delivered in pairs, odd numbered 777s stay closer to home on established routes/destinations until the next one is delivered. The then cycle repeats itself.

Was told this a while back by a mgmt type...but it was confirmed by a crew bus driver so you can take it to the bank!

Yields from Asia are down, have to carry less profitable freight vs. premium packages, so better to stop and carry less gas when it costs over $4.00 per gallon.
