Default Southern Air Hiring Rumor

Heard a rumor from an Atlas Pilot that Southern Air Cargo is getting 737's to fly contract for DHL out of CVG. Any truth to to the Rumor?

If so, does any one know the minimums? Job app location, and if there will be any changes to the pilots' contract?

Hopefully this is not old news...

They start flying the 737 out of CVG this spring. On the 1Q 1224 meeting, the Southern Air MEC said by the end of 2015, they could be up to 15 737s. No idea how firm that is, but i think they start up with maybe 4? A number of furloughs to be recalled before they'll hire off the street, and you'll want to educate yourself on the terms of the DHL deal.

sounds like a good deal if you live close to CVG hub, otherwise not so much. Lower payscale for this 737 flying

Also no home basing, and the latest scheduling rumors have you back in CVG every day. So no hotels and limited per diem. It is a wash for 747 FOs to go to the 737 as Captains financially. 777 FO probably will net more. 737 FO vs regional FO is a tough call. Yeah the pay is better on the Guppy, but 20 days on + all out and backs will probably increase your expenses vs holding a decent line at a regional. Unless you live in or move to CVG.

I pretty certain we have to go down and then back up the Furlough list before we can hire off the street. I expect the recall rate to be low on the way down, but on the way back up its in or out, so they might get more to bite.

I find it hilarious that the folks pushing so hard for the 73 contract/MOU are the ones that bypassed the 73 for the recall.

Thanks for screwing your fellow employee.

+1, Except that it's not all that funny.

To think of it, where's xx? He was pushing it the most. Did he bypass the 73? Is he still in Cincitucky doing um, "paperwork", shmoozing with management? Probably will be the next FO Check Airman on the 777!

That's simply not true. There's an approximate $30k increase in pay to go to the left seat, so unless you're dropping around $2.5k a month on a crashpad and wheels (and in CVG, that's one HELL of a crashpad) there's no way it's a "wash".

As far as the 777FO netting more, yes currently that's true. However, management has already stated that they're planning on increasing the staffing the 777 to bring hours more in line with the 400, meaning 50-60 hours a month, with more reserve time sitting in HKG, LAX and CVG. So that gravy train is coming to a screeching halt.

Bottom line, if you live in or around CVG, the 737 operation is likely to turn out to be a good deal. Most of the people bypassing a recall to the 737 right seat don't live in CVG, and I certainly can't fault them for that. I would be hard pressed to do the same. Left seat is a different matter however.

I really don't have a dog in this fight (well I did but I don't now) but I know WC from a prior life and he was always a good guy to work with and a solid union type. But if it came down to being on unemployment and taking a desk job, I'd do the same as he had done.

Don't know your contract but, from what I understand, he didn't have a choice on the type he was recalled back to. Like I said, don't have the verbiage, just going by what I was told.

It will be a little while before we work through the recall list, so no hiring in the immediate future. I am cautiously optimistic that the new 737 flying, extended terms on the 777 flying with DHL, and new contracts on the 747-400 grant us some near and intermediate term stability. Having said that, the long haul freight market is still facing intense competition and soft demand, so SAI is not out of the woods yet. It could easily go one way or the other at this point. It's very much a wait and see scenario as to whether this company is able to pull off a successful restructuring and turnaround, but so far so good...
