With PIA, once I download it to my Windows XP laptop and followed the setup instructions, it's listed just like WiFi networks within range and you simply select the VPN provider. On my iPad, after following the setup instructions, you simply turn it on/off just like WiFi. So easy even a Cave Man can do it.

I'm really interested in the security that HMA provides. But I'm so turned off from my earlier service, Hotspot Shield. Kept me from logging onto many sites (including pilot.fedex.com), logged on spontaneously, slowed everything down massively. Have people not had any problems like this at all with HMA?

Yes. HMA does slow down the connection when l watch TV from another country most of the time. It does help if the internet speed is fast to begin with.

Another vote for PIA. It's intuitive, fast, and cheap.

I've not used HotSpot. I've used Witopia and I've not experienced anything like that.

The ONLY issue I've seen is that some websites might block certain IPs owned and used by Witopia. For example, Google search or USAA. Sometimes Google will stop your search and report "your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." When that happens, I select another Witopia server site or I use Bing. haha It's that simple.

And it makes sense why websites would start to block some VPN IPs. They want to spy on you. F that. That's exactly why I use a VPN.

Default TORGuard VPN

TORGuard works great....I use it behind the great firewall in China and in the Middle East with no issues. Get their Anonymous VPN for $59.99/year ($5/month). I can get YouTube, Netflix, etc. Use the Stealth VPN servers and in China I use GoogleDNS to bypass DNS poisoning (the Chinese are getting smart)....let me know if you need help with setting static DNS and using GoogleDNS or OpenDNS settings. There's also an OpenVPN App for the iPhone that works great with TORGuard. Here's the link:

I don't do international, but I'm curious about the security aspect. I never use wifi for financial stuff. If I have to do something away from home, I turn off wifi and use 4G/LTE data. How does that compare to these VPN services?

VPN essentially creates a tunnel for your encrypted data that can collapse if it senses an attack. At least that's my VERY simplified understanding. Here's a great video that describes it better:

What is VPN and how does it work

We have a VPN for work, but I was wondering if it's that more secure than the data connection through the carrier's 4G/LTE network.
