Thanks for the info. Appreciate it.

Good info. Guess most of the pilots onboard already meet or exceed the requirements. Some may have to hold off upgrade if they have less than 5000 hours.

Thanks Locke

In initial new hire, if the instructor feels that you have not met the standard, they can hold you back from the PV, MV, or LOE and give you additional training, to protect you from a failure. We have a train to proficiency model for initial new hires, up to 50% over program training lessons, unless the Airman is just not progressing. There are very few washouts from initial.

Due to contract language, the company is not able to provide this latitude for, transition, CQ, Upgrade and upgrade transition.

Short course upgrade for example, is 3 FTD lessons in the left seat. You then take a PV, followed by 2 FF sims, a CQ MV, followed by an OKE and LOE. The instructor does not have the leeway to hold you back if you fall behind.

Unlike initial new hire, the instructor cannot retrain a failed maneuver during an event. For example, if an initial new hire pilot crashes on a V1 maneuver during the MPV, the Instructor, time permitting, can train to proficiency, and have the airman demonstrate the maneuver twice. If a pilot is not a new hire initial, there is no retraining and the event is failed. Unless you are a new hire initial, because of the contract, if you fail ANY of the events, there will be a training review board. That will be strike one of three before you are in jeopardy of termination.

The company has taken steps to mitigate these issues. They have been allowing upgrade pilots to come to the training center a week or so before their scheduled training, and paying for the hotel. To my knowledge, there is no pay for Self Directed Learning. Pilots have access to all of the training devices, and if available, the FTD.

The FTD lessons and the PV are the same lessons given to the new hires. The MV is the same as recurrent. The LOE is the same format as recurrent but to different city pairs.

I hope this clears up a lot of rumors circulating as to the rates of withdrawal and failure in upgrade training.
Very detailed information. Appreciate it. It is better to start working on things and have a positive attitude towards learning from line captains and be ready for upgrade whenever the time comes. Good to know. Appreciate it maxjet.

PS: apologies for double post earlier.

We are expanding like crazy at the moment, but no promises that someone hired today will be in the left seat in a year. There’s a TON of newbies that are already in front of you in line.

I read back to the 200 pages on this thread, but I wanted to ask a couple of pointed questions specific to the 76.

-What is so brutal, specifically, about the 76 scheduling?
-Is it all night hub turns or day time turns also?
-Do you always stay in CVG on layovers or at the outstations also?
-Can you not credit 6 hours of flying a day for 14 days of the 16 day rotation on the 76?
-Is all 76 flying only for DHL and what is the total number of 76s that K4 is wanting/planning by when?
-Does your CBA have a daily min credit and does that count up to breaking min guarantee or only after?

Overall, can somebody summarize what the fleet outlook, numbers and time frame, is for the 74 and 76 as far as the company has indicated to the pilots. Also, what do they want in terms of the #s of crew per airplane on both fleets? This might give some of us a better idea if it is a good place to move to for a relatively quick upgrade.
Why is staffing a problem with the new CBA; Is it simply the competition with the whole industry hiring or an ACMI lifestyle/Kalitta thing that is keeping them from getting the pilots they need?

I have an app in with 10K+ TT, 2k+ 121 PIC, 3800 -400/-8 and 11 years ACMI and foreign cargo ops. I'm just hoping to educate myself here as to whether this would be the right move for what I am looking for, was I lucky enough to get a chance to interview. I would be leaving a very good job in hopes of finding the left seat again in a relatively short time. I could be upgraded in 2 years here or another 6 years, IDK, but I have a pretty good lifestyle with descent money while I'm waiting.

Thanks guys for all the detailed post that are giving us a inside perspective to the life of K4 pilots!

[QUOTE=jackcarls0n;2612629]Thanks for the good information. Ordered a 24 bag and a messenger bag for flight stuff.

Will see how it goes and use the 22inch LW if it works. Thanks again.

Today is day 28 on the road for me. The 22” LW does the job, if you roll your clothes properly. Also, carry a few Tide Pods in a Rubbermaid container, to do wash a couple times. I usually carry 3, but it’s getting warmer, so ran out and had to buy detergent once.

I flew with one guy that carried 3 pairs of shoes, a sport jacket, and way too much other stuff! Looked like a regional F/A with all the bags! Only thing missing was his 16 days of food!

I can’t write to the issues on the 767 fleet as I am not there.

I was told recently that “They” would like to have 30 747 and 20-30 767 during this growth period. I see 24-26 747 and 8 767 as realistic by the end of 2018.

This continued expansion seems plausible as they are starting construction on an addition to Building 1 in Ypsilanti as they are hiring additional support personnel. There is also growth in Oscoda at our maintenance facility. We have picked up additional outside work for our engine shop from the engine manufacturers because the quality of our work is so high. The Kalitta empire is very healthy right now.

The problem with your question is that this prediction of fleet size changes all of the time. Connie’s broker identifies possible acquisitions all the time. Some are flyable, some are parts birds, and some are pretty new like the Saudi’s 800’s. Will we get them? If it is under Connie’s terms yes. If not, no.

We staff on the 747 7 Captains per Aircraft and 14 FO’s. We are about 40 Captains short and a total of 150 pilots short right now for the airline. We have doubled the size of training classes to 16 on the 747. We are only training 2-4 pilots a month on the 767 because there is no available simulator time anywhere.

We will have a second 747 simulator online in the last quarter of this year. We are actively searching for a 767 simulator and have not been successful. FedEx buys up all the viable ones at inflated prices. It costs 15 million to have one built, if we give them the front end of a 767, and 20 million without, I have been told.

Expect hiring to continue for at least the next 2 years. If the economy continues to flourish, K4 will probably continue to grow. If the economy falters we will not. Connie has a great business plan in my opinion.

Captain upgrades. On the 747 there are twice as many FO’s as Captains. Right now we have about 90 Captains on the 747. You do the math as to upgrade.

Please do not come here for the money or the upgrade. The money will pale in comparison to others in the next few years. The upgrade will happen or it will not. Come here because you enjoy the work and the company. I have said since I have been here, even under the old contract, that K4 is the best kept secret in aviation.

Yeah, laundry pods or detergent packets are good idea. I am planning to carry just one suitcase and a backpack/messenger bag/laptop bag (whatever you call it).

I'd give LW a try too. But yeah, I don't wanna be the person with 3-4 bags!

Really nice when you guys don't sugar coat things or say things in a sarcastic way! To the point and straight forward. I am glad to be joining K4. Looking forward to the flying.
