UPS/FedEx question

Was curious if UPS or FedEx has any space available travel benifits with any other airlines? Just curious, thanks.

Last I looked, FDX had a lot as they offered a discount to other airline employees. UPS has just a few (they don't even discount to us). There are deals on Southwest and Delta's international flights that I know of.

Falconjet 12-30-2006 01:16 PM

At FedEx you can buy space A tickets for SW for about 90 bucks a trip from corporate travel. Sometimes it is a good deal, most of the time if you can plan ahead of time you can almost match that and have an actual seat.

I've heard there are a couple of other deals but again, if you have the ability to plan ahead you can get a real ticket at better prices than the discount they offer.

I thought FedEX pretty much has ID90s with every airline in the free world.

Not true?

Falconjet 12-30-2006 05:26 PM

We very well might, I've only used the SW deal once and haven't ever tried to get the other ones because I'd heard they weren't worth it.

I'm sure somebody else will pipe in eventually who knows more about it.

Which a lot of times are not worth it for the space A seat compared to the guaranteed seat and cheap fare you can find on the interent with some advance planning.

dudewannabe 12-30-2006 05:35 PM

I reason I asked is because I've worked at various airlines in my career and they all have discounts on FedEx.

I think between FedEx and UPS, seems to me like the FedEx guys have more bennies (I don't work for any of them, just a guess).

Magenta Line 12-30-2006 06:14 PM

I have to ditto md11fr8dog here. You can find cheap seats online guaranteed.

We do have SWA tix and they're around $50 (?) per leg, space available.

My buddies not on furlough at legacy carriers complain that finding 4 seats anytime to get 2 adults and 2 kids ANYWHERE w/i the CONUS can be next to impossible. Personally, buying 1 tix and jumpseating myself (to WallyWorld for example) is enough trouble. The way I see it, unless I'm going class B to play golf, see a bud, girlfriend, etc...., I lay down the AMEX card for a fully refundable and changeable ticket.

Not true.......SWA is our best deal. Most others are ID75 which aren't worth squat. We used to have a good deal on TWA......but alas

Everytime I have gotten fare qoutes for our STBY interline tickets, I was able to beat it online with a guaranteed seat, plus I got the Frequent flyer miles.

Yes we give most of our Airline Bretheren the same Shipping discount on FedEx that we the employees get.

dudewannabe 12-30-2006 06:58 PM

Well guys, I have to say I am VERY surprised!! I've always thought since our company gets FedEx discounts, that you guys get the same deal on us.

So I guess the UPS guys aren't really missing out on much as far as IDs go.

Ok now, let's start a debate on who has the better paint job!! just kiddin'

furloughman 12-30-2006 07:04 PM

Does UPS or FEX allow employees' families to travel on the aircraft with seats.
ie 747 upper deck?

CE750 12-30-2006 07:05 PM

in this day and age, Space A travel is about as useless as tits on a boar hog. You're best bet is to rack up frequent flyer miles and get hard tickets with your miles.. One of the best perks of my new job is the 2 commutes on airlines twice every month that average 3000-4000 miles.. at that pace, I've got 4 solid tickets for my family vacation inside a year, and first/business class tickets if I wait two years..

Well, now we agree on two things.

I was told that UPSers get a discount on shipping at FedEx but when I asked the guy at Kinko's, he looked at me as if I was nuts.

Just because the Kinkos guys says so, doesn't make it so. I think UPS (the air division) get the discounted shipping (trucker drivers, couriers etc don't). Its an interline bennie. Kinkos should be on top of this, but who knows. I was in the Kinkos behind our layover hotel in HNL recently and they had a sign stating that interline shipping was not avail. 12/16 to some time near the New Year. So they should know about interline shipping bennies. Try going to the local station with your id when shipping.

Should be fairly easy to find out the truth. Any FedEx center can look it up on their computers.

thanks for the info. sounds like space A conus travel would not really be a benny no matter who you flew for....great. still curious on international flights, i guess ID90 for a vacation to europe might be an option as a cargo guy flying on a legacy for space A?

Magenta Line 12-31-2006 05:45 AM

No family travel on FedEx -- THANK GOODNESS!

In that case, we at Big Brown have you beat. We give pilots, indeed any employee at any airline the same dscount that UPS give us. In round numbers it comes out to about a 0% discount (they don't give us one :D )

The price on those tickets is good, it's the standby space A part that sucks. This past summer, I paid $180 each for my wife and kids to go round trip from MEM to SAN on AA (I think it was an ID75.) Tough to beat that price on the internet. However, each way took 2 days with an overnight in DFW, mainly due to full flights between DFW and SAN. The new lower capacity, higher load factor philosophy is killing space A travel.

It's like I tell my wife, "I'll concede you one thing honey, your in laws are much nicer than my inlaws" <G>

Falconjet 12-31-2006 06:34 PM

3 years ago I flew from BNA to SAN with the wife and 2 kids on those SW space A tickets. 88 bucks apiece round trip with the corporate travel surcharge. It was spring break week in Memphis, and I picked Wed to Wed to get the best chance of getting all of us on a flight. We drove over to BNA and we got the 4 last seats on the flight we wanted. We of course were scattered about the jet, but we got there. We had several days until our family reunion so it worked out.

Coming home we again managed to get all four of us on the same flight, at the last minute, and I even got to sit with one of the kids. All in all it was nerve racking though and not worth the savings. Since then we just buy tickets as far as advance as possible and rest comfortably knowing we at least have a seat.

This fall I bought tickets on NW from MEM to TPA for a 4 day golf trip with my brothers and Dad instead of jumpseating. I could check my golf clubs, figured I'd get upgraded to first class (because of all my deadhead FF miles) and the tickets were only about 210 bucks. Didn't even try to see if I could beat that with the space A tickets from corporate travel.

If I need to fly somewhere it is because I have a limited amount of time, so I'd rather buy the ticket and know I'll make whatever it is I am flying to.

This should not even be a factor

If you base where you want to work on travel bennies, then your looking at the wrong stuff brother. Space a travel in today's world is frustrating and forces you and your family to lose days of vacation time. The only time I even try it is if I'm by myself, and even then I'd rather jump seat on FedEx as opposed to dealing with the grumpy gate agents and beg for a ride.

I don’t think Kinko’s can give you “airline employee” discount, at least I’ve never been able to get one in the past (since FedEx took over), instead you must go to the nearest FedEx distribution center, but I'm not sure if upsers get a discount, probably not.
