FDX - Min time on backend DH layover
 

In the Sept bidback many of the 757 weekend layover cities were converted to Double DHs, with crews flying back to MEM early Sat afternoons.

Look closely at your pairing and check the layover time.

Many are very, very close to the contractual limit of 8 hrs domestically.

IAW the CBA this cannot be reduced at all.

(Note: Domestically, min scheduled layover is 10+15, reducible to 9+00 operationally --- except when the layover proceeds a DH. Then scheduled & operational layover minimums are both 8 hrs)

If the Fri night sort goes late, be sure to double check your Sat morning block-in time to ensure you're afforded the minimum 8 hour layover.

It does not matter whether you plan to deviate home, or in fact already submitted a back end DH request.

You are still authorized GT to the hotel, the hotel room, and the 8 hour min layover time to combat cumulative fatigue.

Call the schedulers and have them rebuild the pairing IAW the CBA, to include the new backend DH flight to MEM.

Depending on the size of the airport, that flight may not be available until much later in the evening, or even the next morning.

Your freedom to deviate does not change, but the Credit Hour value of your trip most likely will --- with a portion at draft, due to your extension in the field.

Fly Safely....Legally...Reliably...Well Rested...and always IAW the CBA.

Thanks for the contract re-fresher D,,,been here 18 yrs and still don't remember all the tricks.

...and of course, this applies to any backend domestic DH --- not just Sat mornings.

However, on Saturdays many smaller fields have a limited number of flights which return to MEM in the early afternoon, and thus rebuilding the pairing for a legal rest period, IAW the CBA, can yield a rather significant extension.

In Sept there also seems to be an increase in the number of odd-ball, 3-day trips that may have a similar backend DH min layover construction.

Regardless, of what Sort City your trip transits (MEM, AFW, EWR, OAK) it's always wise to understand how the "timeliness of the sort" affects your trip pairing.

This just happened to me yesterday. Scheduled for a 8+35 layover with a back end dead head. We were 55 minutes late taking off from Memphis. In our case, the the schedulers had already rebuilt our pairing before we landed. So no call was necessary. And the next available flight wasn't until the next day. Extra 3+30 in pay.

Another one for you. If you're flying a block time trip, check that the deadhead they have scheduled is actually accurately reflecting the block time on the carriers schedule. They shorted me an hour, which became obvious to me when I thought, hey, you can't get from point A to B in just two hours, no way. Then I noticed they did the same thing to some other pairings. One of them reflecting about 15 minutes turn time between legs (instead of 1 + 15). It's rather obvious if you look at it, but when you're deviating, who actually looks at the deadhead leg to make sure it is accurate?

No advantages to deviating on the backend early

Only required to do it 8 hrs prior to backend DH flight showtime

Min layover is 8 hrs --- thus, you can always just do it when you land

DLAX, not true if it's international, 60 hours then...which can get sporty for last minute revisions. I've had to fight the you've already deviated even though a trip is revised fight
