Knob,

I'll recognize your question after you apologize to Jetjok for your second post.

TonyC

I really wasn't looking for an answer. Just pointing out that there are pilots doing what you don't like and you seem to be unaware of it. As for Jetjok, I think if you found something else to do besides posting on APC dozens of times a week you might actually start to enjoy life a little more and be a little less bitter. Enjoy your free time doing something else like Jetjok apparently is doing. I wish him and you well.

Doorknob,

You have no idea of what you speak. Just for the record, I'm retired from FedEx and the USAF/ANG (after 34 years.) Before FedEx, I was a Vice President at a major life insurance company. I haven't been on any military installation (except once for "old timers day") since 1999. I have plenty to occupy my time and am now doing everything I want and almost nothing I don't want. I've worked for three flight organizations: Pan American World Airways; UPS; and FedEx, and was treated just fine in two of the three, UPS being the exception, but I was treated there, the same as everyone else, it was just that I couldn't stand their treatment. I tell you all this because you obviously don't understand or appreciate that someone can actually still have a desire to keep up with the goings on at a prior job.

I have dinner once a month with my ex-fighter squadron buds; go to our annual banquet with the insurance company employees; and have lunch and talk with some of my currently employed FedEx friends, both pilots as well as ground guys, often. I make a decided effort to keep in touch with old friends, and talk with many, often. Oh, and I spend perhaps 15 or 20 minutes a day here on APC. As for my being "bitter", nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, with the exception of my still-lousy backhand in racquetball, I live a pretty wonderful life. By the way, I'd like to see you find one guy I flew with at FedEx who thought I was bitter. An A-hole perhaps, but bitter, not a chance.

My final thought for you is that perhaps you should either learn about the people you comment on negatively, or not comment on them at all. I hope that if or when you retire, your life will be as well ordered as mine is. In the meantime, I think you're a real jerk. Carry on.

Jetjok, it's a bit difficult to discern from his poor sentence construction, but I think he was calling me bitter, and he's decided you are enjoying your free time. Either way, it's pretty obvious he missed the Dale Carnegie course on How to Win Friends and Influence People.

He seems to think he's telling me something I didn't already know, that training events do not show up on a calendar when viewed by anyone other than that pilot. Since we all have training twice a year, I guess that makes us all calendar blockers by his twisted analysis.

Instructor or not, all Trips show up on the calendars, including those which are accepted at Draft by Flex Instructors on PAY ONLY status (yes, I've flown with one), unless they Block their calendar. But nobody has control over the display of training events, even Flex Instructors, so you can't accuse them of Blocking their calendars, unless they actually are.

But maybe that's the excuse he's using for Blocking his calendar?

One thing that I don't understand is your condescending and superior attitudes you repeatedly display on this forum, but thanks for the lecture. Secondly, I don't normally wear panties unless it's a special event so your choice of pronouns probably doesn't qualify. Do I want you trust me? I do not care. I don't even know you and your personal assessment of me is about as important as a wispy cloud on a windy day. Finally, I suggest you clean your heavily magnified bifocals and re-read the section where I stated I don't block my calendar. Thank you though for giving me a brief glimpse into your deep pool of wisdom.

You asked a question, I gave you my answer. Nothing deep about that.

I told you I wasn't accusing you with my use of the pronoun "you" and warned you to not get upset about it (that's what the expression about gettin' your panties in a twist is all about -- not meant to be taken literally, it's a figure of speech). You still managed to take it personally and get your ... feelings hurt. Sorry 'bout that. I tried.

Getting back to the original topic of non-members, I would avoid eating the yellow cake in AOC when a non-member has their retirement ceremony. Like the important gouge you got as a young boy in the snow-belt to never eat the yellow snow, that advice could apply here too. Safety first!

My apologies, but before we get back on topic of non-members, could you tell me more about this "open calendars" to all idea? We are ALPA at my company too, but we do not have the ability to see other crew members calendar. We can see their bid award, and other daily or monthly opentime bids (if we were competing with them based on seniority), but we do not have access to their calendars.

What purpose or value does viewing another crew members calendar serve? I remember someone mentioned unity and trust, but by blocking ones calendar they are eroding others' trust?

Are crew members modifying their calendar (I.e. Picking up trips) in violation of the CBA? And by blocking their calendars other members can't see this?

Does the CBA have language to prohibit this and does the MEC press the Company to cease the system that allows this? Where is the breakdown, I guess, is the question I'm asking. It has to be more than just who is hiding their calendar and who is not. And before you answer with unity and trust, consider this: You could pick 1,000 people in any profession from any education, training, and background and get the 10% that will never toe the line.

Just quickly, but open calendar is means that I can view someone else's calendar within the standard pilot website. If they block their calendar there then I have to access an old DOS system to view their calendar and it takes about 5-10 minutes depending on how proficient you are.

As to why. There are many reasons. If I want to try and work a swap, the fastest way to to look at the bid to see who has the trip I want and then where he lives to see if he has a trip to/from his home. But you need to check his calender to see if he still has the trip. Does he fly that trip all the time. Easier to do all from the calendar page. If the trip looks like "His type" of trip then, I don't usually bother with the swap request and move to the next guy.

If I'm dropping a trip I look to see who might want the trip and what are they doing now. Do I have a better deal for them. This mostly works once you know the guys that fly similar trips to you.

If I'm flying with a guy, I might want to see what he normally does. Does he fly this type of international trip frequently? Not that most people check very often, but when you want to check and you cannot, it is a hassle.

On reserve you can track reserve assignments easier and see if how your day/week might flow out for you.

I'm sure there are tons more but a few quick reasons I looked over the last year.
