As a New hire at Nippon Cargo you can expect your guaranteed ten days off plus a few blank days. Real life depends on your domicile, ORD, LAX, JFK. Which one are you?
If you live in domicile it's impossible to be home every day.
Almost everyone commutes, and no one holds "lines". We bid hard days off, either in a block of ten or two smaller blocks. And yes, commuting adds days away from home, especially for ORD pilots.
Hope that wasn't too irrelevant.

How would life be in the LAX base?

LAX can be pretty nice. Trips start LAX - SFO - NRT. From there guys usually stay in NRT flying Asian out and backs for a week or so and then return to LAX. Might see the occasional NRT - ANC. I rarely see the LAX guys flying within North America.
If you do several Pacific crossings you can get into decent overtime (over 65 hours) but I wouldn't count on it.
Also, NRT - LAX is a two man crew (JCAB regs)
Most guys commute to LAX from west coast US and Canada homes. Couple from Hawaii. A few live there. I can't remember the departure times and how the commute is.

And a good way for them to find out how vindictive UPS can be, something they would be foolish to do while on probation. I speak from 25 yrs of experience. Keep a LOW profile while on probation, folks.

Not currently, but there are rumors of it. They are definitely short FOs.

Thanks for all the replies! My irrelevant comment merely meant I appreciate any feedback regardless the background. I'm a couple years out from moving to the private sector and figure I may as well shoot for the moon with my ambitions. Wherever I put my efforts I'd like to be well informed. As I lurk FedEx/UPS seem like the pipe dream for me. Knowing different strokes for different folks, sometimes dreams are nightmares
Schedules surely vary depending on airframe and home base, wether flying or reserve I'm curious if the time is typically "blocked" in multiple days
FDXLAG and Hercdriver130 hit on what I was interested in knowing more about. Seems like commuting and having a schedule that's closer to a couple days on a couple days off would tie most of your free time up in commuting where 17/13 would only be one or two days s month. But would really want to be gone 17 days in a row? I realize beggars can't be choosers and no perfect job exists. Trying to be optimistic I'll hope I have a choice where I work vs praying for any job when the time comes. Several responses have already been insightful...thanks!!!

At FDX as new hire you will likely sit reserve for several years or more. The reserve schedule is 15 days 8 months and 19 days 4 months. The R days can be one long string or strings as short as 4 days. You will train twice a year for what looks like 3 days each. You might be able to conflict. There is some opportunity to work extra if you desire. Commuting is fairly easy but it will add an exra day to your time away from home each time you commute to reserve.

FDXLAG, is it likely or possible that these days can all be spent at the same location? If you domicile/home base (sorry for poor fluency of lingo) will or can all you reserve be spent there? Peeling back the question, if you move to Memphis could you be asked to sit reserve in Anchorage?
