I can hear the conversation now, "Honey, we can't move to XYZ city because I would have to jumpseat to my really good job in MEM on the FedEx 767." That's hilarious!*?

Mark

I think he means Less total JumpSeats.
Our MD-10's have 4 in back and 3 up front for a total of 7.
Most our A300's have 4-5 in Back and 2 upfront.

Our 757's only have 3 & 1.
I have never seen the Cockpit of our 767's but I understand that there are really 3 1/2 up front only and bags are a PIA.

This has got to be the dumbest tbread ever and tbe guy that started it has got to be the biggest moron ever.

Really? Zpig I respectfully disagree. We have lots of stupid threads, but I sort of like this one. I remember in indoc a story about a pilot asking the same thing...ended up moving to Sioux Falls. He wanted a FedEx terminal but not a lot of nearby FedEx pilots. Anecdote was he looked at places with lots of flights and not many staging pilots and made his choice. Legend? Dunno...but he had a point...

Sometimes for a military guy the problem is there are too many choices! We are used to moving on someone else's schedule going where we are told. Its liberating but also daunting when you can finally say "now what?"

Same verse--different application....I am changing planes and domiciles and doing the FDA thing. Realizing that A) I can move wherever I want when I come back stateside and B) I probably won't have the 30% MD11 FO travel bank to commute with and I am also looking at this thread with interest. I love skiing, but I think the DEN FDX mafia would tar and feather me if I started competing for their jumpseats. BOI is nice, as is GEG, but maybe I live there part time and stay in Florida. NW Florida is a miserable commute if you don't have bank, so maybe we move to central FL? I find the discussion interesting. I'd like to live in domicile in ANC as a captain, but I have a feeling train has left the station and won't be coming back. I don't want to live in MEM, LAX, or IND...so what is next? You get the idea...there are points in life when you CAN make your own call on where to live. Its not just a question for new hires or wannabes, but also empty nesters, FDA returnees, or folks who are just a bit ready for a change.

I think this thread highlights one of the best reasons that still exists to work for FedEx. You can truly live anywhere in the world and fly for FedEx. I know a guy who lived on a sailboat in Singapore. Another who lived on a 42' fishing boat in Puerto Rico. Ran into a guy who commutes form India. Flew with a guy who had a compound in the Alaskan bush. As a Guard guy, most of my passenger airline buds planned their futures around which hub they would eventually die in. That takes on new meaning at FedEx because my life expectancy in Memphis would probably land somewhere shy of retirement age. So I plan to never live at my hub. Or even within 200 miles of it. So instead, I commute on the company's dime to work. I get paid to read a book or watch a movie, accumulate frequent flier miles and plan my family's next vacation to use them up. Totally my choice and not for everyone. But I made it based on guys who were living 1000 different lifestyles at FedEx. I like my choice but a thread like this would have been useful when I originally made it. We're hiring again. Time to share some gouge.

....about as moronic as the guy that doesn't spell check before posting a thread about being a moron.....

Albie,

Thanks for the feedback. That is why I started this thread. Spent a long time in the military complaining about forced moves, but when the time came to pick realized it is hard to choose when someone isn't forcing you to move.

Hindsight is 20/20. Wish I bid ANC as a new hire and moved the family to Alaska. Have a few friends who did that and are very happy up there.

Something I never really considered was mentioned to me in a PM. Consideration of where your kids want to go to college. In-state tuition, state's that have free tuition for the kids of veterans, etc. Just another piece of the puzzle.

After the Buckeye win, your question is settled. Ohio is the place to be!

You got me.

With 15 yrs under my belt and (hopefully) only a few more left to go, I've been contemplating a seat change and even equipment/domicile change. However, with decreasing company jumpseats along with increasing deviation bank monies to aid in the commute (due to better seniority), I've been hesitant to pull any of those career triggers. I've only got six yrs to go tops, why make those last six difficult? I would like to move to ANC but can't even hold that now plus, I'm in agreement with Albie -- the sun is setting there.

I like this thread -- I like it when my peers express the same, similar, or vastly different ideas/concerns about this crazy vocation.
