FDX travel for trip a day early....
Tried to get rid of a Monday DH trip, (DH to GTF, operate to MEM Tuesday morning), because of the approaching storm in my neck of the woods (Midwest). Denied about ten times so far, "insufficient reserves". So I am leaving home a day early to position to GTF. Can I call the hotel desk to get a hotel room a day early or do I call our hotel directly? I can use my bank for the room right? I should know this and I admit ignorance. Thanks for any help....
By the way, if any MEM 757 CA would like a nice easy day leg.....PM me and we can set it up. Trip 145 2Feb15.

Call the hotel. They are under no obligation to give you the room or the rate, but they likely will. Make sure you get a detailed receipt including taxes.
If that doesn't work try our hotel people maybe they will help.

You don't have to stay in the contract hotel. Many times the contract hotel won't give you the contract rate. You can get a hotel cheaper on your own most times. Use Priceline or any other means to reserve a cheaper hotel room.

Limited to contract rate for the city. Can stay anywhere and reimbursed up to contract rate. Layover hotel may not give you contract rate a day early, but probably will. Beware of "fedex" rate. Not the same as contract rate.

Hotel in lieu of DH is a situation where you create your own weekend layover...eg Friday GTF Backend DH with the Monday DH to GTF. Both DH tickets create a minibank to cover the hotel and per diem costs.
In many cases, hotel will allow an early arrival without charging you. YMMV of course

I am now taking a Delta jet via ATL to MEM (paying with Bank$$$). My home city no longer has a Sunday morning FedEx flight to the planet. Will then take our jumpseat to GTF. Is the hotel$$ in lieu of the Delta jet on Sunday or just the scheduled DH on Monday?

FWIW-
my stress level is way down when I'm DH'ing to work.
Had a similar trip where the company's scheduled flight was the last one of the day to my destination...with no backup options possible from the connecting city.
Since company is shaving things a bit closer, I feel no obligation to greatly exceed their expectations by traveling way early. I make realistic travel plans, and if they should go awry, simply call the company and pass the fun on.
Downside is the potential to lose trip guarantee if replaced by a RA pilot launched out of Memphis. But I've never experienced that so I don't know if you lose all, or only a part, nor do I know what happens to the bank.
Weeklong trip different situation, but the 7 hour late Monday DH just not as big an issue for me

Airbusdriver, DH'ing to Memphis creates a taxable event.
If you want to travel on Sunday, then I'd look at the Delta website and see what their non-refundable fare is versus our corporate travel rate. If you can get it cheaper elsewhere, you are free to do so.
The bank money is all one big fund for your described situation
